Using a Top Weather Station Mounting Idea

When you examine these ideas, you can see that you need to think about how to find and install your remote sensors.

You may search for a weather station pole mounting kit to use in your mounting.

If you do this well, you will have many years of climate information being collected properly and accurately.

You will win if you pick the proper type of mount. As I said earlier the proper mounting will make your climate information gathering a

joyful delight for you.

Weather station pole mounting kits come as prepacked, selected, ideal mounting kits. A great example of this would be a best-seller weather station mounting pole kit from Amazon.

Try An Ambient Mounting Pole Kit

One of the best-sellers by my viewers is the Ambient water station mounting kit. This kit when examined will trigger Ambient weather station mounting ideas.

You will not have to pick out individual pieces to use when mounting your weather station. It will have already been done for you.

You will be extracting the best experience from the equipment you have purchased.

Information You Need To Consider When Mounting

So in looking at the mounting ideas, if you decide on the pole mounts you will need to key in on a couple of very important points.

Find out how big the attachment area on your weather station is. If it will fit up to let’s say for example a description on a weather station may read as such, “The sensor array mounts to any pole between 1 and 2″ diameter. The adaptive mounting bracket and U-Bolt design can be tightened to your mounting pole (not included).”

So as you can see the stations don’t usually come with a mount set up, a pole, or any mount tripod, or whatever, and however, you decide to fasten the equipment to its chosen location.

You can take a look at some of the best offered on the market to use for the mounting process.

If you choose to mount on your chimney We recommend this chimney weather station mounting pole kit to use to mount from Ambient Weather.

A note to the buyer, please be aware that the anemometer pictured does not come with the mount assembly kit.

It supplies you with a 1 1/4” inch pole for mounting the sensor unit onto. It is available in 35” sections.

So your mount can be 35 or approximately 70” or approximately 105 “ as a height, depending on what height you need.

Mounting A Weather Station

To understand these ideas, you must carefully plan how to find and install your remote sensors.

If you do this well, you will collect climate information properly and accurately for many years.

You will win if you pick the proper type of pole mount. You can take a look at some of the best offered on the market to use for the mounting process.

Make sure to secure your equipment properly. It should be able to withstand heavy rain, strong wind gusts, extreme heat, and possibly heavy snowfalls.

Imagine the harshest weather conditions you might face. Take steps to protect your weather equipment from loss or damage.

So location means everything to successfully collect your weather data

What Type of Weather Station Pole Mounting Kit Will Work For You

So in contemplating your decision, you have decided where the station will be able to sensor the best daily climate results for your liking. Now it’s time to decide how to fasten it down and set it up.

After you have purchased your weather station many different weather station mounting ideas come to weather station mountingmind. Mounting your personally picked weather station is what you have been looking forward to doing.

You researched and purchased your choice of stations with the end game being that you have plans for what it will deliver for you.

Maximizing the instruments you now have access to will require setting them up properly. As you research this whole process you realize that buying the correct equipment is only a small part of the whole picture.

It is necessary to correctly mount your station in a location that will maximize the readings from these weather instruments.

Does the Manufacturer of the Mounting System Matter

With this in mind, you will now need to zero in on what manufacturer and make/model you have purchased. This will matter because of the remote sensor package that you now have.

A larger more sophisticated remote sensor unit could be as large as a couple of feet of instruments, however, most remote units are around 15-18 inches in length. This will make a sizable pack that needs to be secured in a good location.

How do you figure out where to set this up, check out our What’s Involved in Weather Station Mounting post. We have many great points to think about and act on. That will help you out with this.

So if you own an AcuRite weather station then you will be dealing with an AcuRite weather station mounting. You will need to find out from their manual what their specifications are and how they suggest you set up the sensor pack.

With the AcuRite 01036 Pro Weather Station 5-in-1 sensor the mounting instructions give you the following information “The included mounting bracket is designed to screw directly onto wooden posts or surfaces that are 2”x 4” or larger. The sensor can also be mounted directly to 3/4” steel pipe (available at hardware stores”Acurite 1036 Pro 5 in 1 Mounting

So as you can see companies will give you specific directions on a few measurements that you must match up when installing the sensor on an AcuRite pole mounting.

AcuRite does not seem to sell specific mounting poles, to be used with Acurite weather stations.

However, there are mounting pole kits that you may choose from for your mounting project.

I mentioned them in the earlier segment called Using a Top Weather Station Mounting Idea. Please go there to read about some of your options for mounting.

There are Davis Instrument mounting kits or Ambient mounting kits that are popular and you could buy to use with the AcuRite.

As you will notice, they can be used by any manufacturer’s product if the diameter of the coupling area matches up with the PVC piping or piping that is being used to hold the sensors in place.

The sensors come with a mounting coupler which will need to be attached to your roof your pole the top of your fence, etc, etc.

Here is what it looks like for the AcuRite Pro 5-in-1 sensor.

AcuRite Weather Station Mounting Pole Directions

The most important thing is to ensure that the elements do not impact the location of your weather station.

Secure it firmly with a strong mounting pole. Make sure all your connections are tightened well. [toc]

Some parts are made of plastic. Please do not over-tighten anything, as it may break or strip something.

For optimal usage and performance, place your weather station in a suitable location and secure it.

Ensure that it is elevated above the ground to obtain precise wind and temperature readings.

Again these are discussed in our What’s Involved in Weather Station Mounting post. We hope this information has guided you, we are very glad to help you out with your setup.

A Look At Weather Station Mounting Pieces

Finding The Pieces To Use For Mounting

Let's take a closer look at weather station mounting pieces. As I have worked on content for you the reader, I have found that there are several moving pieces when it comes to mounting a weather station.

What do I mean by weather station mounting pieces? Simply stated you have now purchased a personal weather station and you need to mount it somewhere on your property.

weather station mounting pieces

Weather Station Mounting Pieces

Let's take a detailed look at how you got here.   Your arrival wasn't accidental, but it happened because you have completed the following steps.

3 Main Steps To Finally Mounting Your Weather Station

  • You picked out a weather station that fits your needs. You used my Top 10 Points To Consider When Buying A Personal Weather Station Free Report to decide on the personal wireless weather station that you now own.
  • You then had to figure out where in your home the weather station displays fit best into your daily living routines.
  • Thirdly you then used my free site placement worksheet, Site Placement-Install Your Weather Station which is all about placing your weather station to determine where you will be installing your selected weather station.

So you are here now. It is time to figure out how you will mount your weather station.

Do you know, what weather station mounting pieces are needed to accomplish a successful mounting in your yard?

What Weather Station Mounting Pieces Are Available To You

The first thing I have discovered on this journey is that trying to buy anything to use to mount a weather station is very difficult in my area.

I am going to go into detail to show you what I have experienced.

Finding the weather station mounting pieces in my location has not worked for me.

What I mean is I could not buy them locally near my home.

My success has been shopping on Amazon.

Follow me as I walk you through three local store walk-throughs.

Lowe's My Local Large Box Hardware Choice

I shopped at this location 11 miles from where I live. After walking the store, aisle after aisle, what I found is that they didn't carry any hardware that I could use to mount a television antenna to a location, whether it be a roof and side mount on an eave or whatever.

No section in the store had anything to offer me for mounting a weather station.

In fact, upon asking an employee I kind of received a half-baked answer.

Boiled down to "no clue" Why Are You Asking Me This, Is This a Thing Today, In 2022?"

No one installs a TV antenna anymore? Do they? So I was shown where a galvanized pipe was located.

This happened, I am sure because I said you know maybe a galvanized pipe and a bracket to fasten to a roof, a ground mount stand, whatever. So no luck here.

Only some galvanized pipes to choose from.

Next Up Was My Closest Home Depot

So I got into my auto and traveled 5 miles to my closet Home Depot. Another large box store hardware entry. No luck here either.

I got directed this time to the roofing area. I believe the clerk this time actually did a better job listening to me, and even though he was struggling to understand what I wanted, he did think it through and directed me to the roofing area.

So what did I find here, some interesting things for my roof, some ideas, but nothing practical, that had anything to do with, mounting a weather station.

How About Ace Hardware And What They Offer

I guess after my visits to Lowe's and then Home Depot, I would probably get the same thing from my local Ace Hardware Store.

Well, I found out the bottom line, was yes the same thing.

But there was one large exception. I found the customer service at Ace to be outstanding compared to what I experienced at Lowe's and Home Depot.

How about your experiences? Have you found large box stores lack customer service?

Let me know what your experiences have been?

So yes as I referred earlier same last end result. They didn't have anything, I desired or needed as my weather station mounting pieces.

Farmington Ace Hardware Store

Farmington Ace Hardware Store

Can A Local Hardware Store Chain Be Your Answer?

My job was to shop any local hardware stores looking for the pieces I needed to find. But this was a difficult chore.

My local Ace Hardware Store, while stocked full of wonderful items, It didn't have what I was looking for.

Leaving me with Amazon being my only source of the pieces I needed for mounting the AcuRite Iris 5-In-1 weather station.

So my local search moved on. Where did I go next?

My local search for mounting pieces for my wireless personal weather station took me to the three stores I have just talked about.

Other choices? I really don't have other choices near me.

So I was kind of stuck with Amazon being my answer.

AcuRite Iris 5 in 1 Indoor Outdoor Wireless Weather Station

AcuRite Iris 5 in 1 Indoor Outdoor Wireless Weather Station

The star of this show is the AcuRite Iris 5-In-1 weather station. You may go to my review of the AcuRite Iris

or you may be interested in checking out my previous post, Watch As I Unbox The AcuRite Iris 5-In-1 Weather Station

You can see why I am excited about getting this set up. I will be mounting the AcuRite  Iris in my son's yard.

Watch my videos from the mounting on my YouTube Channel George Loves Weather.

What I Have Purchased For My Weather Station Mounting Pieces

So quite a bit of research went into finding what would work for mounting the AcuRite Iris 5-In-1 weather station.

I decided to mount it on a tree stump, in an area of a yard. It will require a bracket to be screwed into the tree stump.

Then a pole either threaded into the bracket on set on the bracket holder and tightened so as not to move.

I can see the biggest problem with the mounting process to stabilizing the weather station against any wind. Higher speed winds especially need to be accounted for.

So I settled on these two pieces. I purchased them from Amazon as you can see.

I had looked at these other poles and support pieces before I had decided on the ones that I am going to use when mounting this weather station at my son's home.

[amazon box=”B000SONAJ6″ template=”horizontal”]

[amazon box=”B098NHTF64″ template=”horizontal”]

So I will be using these two main components in the mounting.

I see that one of the pieces the Steel Pole for Solare Street Lights actually wasn't exactly what I thought it was.

The pictures in the description show it appearing perpendicular. That is what I wanted to buy.

Often the descriptions in Amazon are wanting for a more accurate description and more pictures.

Be Aware of this when shopping for weather station mounting pieces.

However once the piece arrived it has a slight angle to it. So some DIY adaptations will be needed at the time of mounting.

If you watch the mounting videos for the AcuRite Iris you will see what I mean.

Anyway we made it work for us. Below are some other suggested pieces that may work for you.

Where Do You Place Your Weather Station ??A Land Study?? Find The Best Location For The Best Results

Mounting Your Weather Station In The Best Place

So when you're going to be placing your weather station, you're going to have different types of groundwater, trees, rocks, soil conditions, the house where it is to sheds, all kinds lines of things you're going to be dealing with.

So as you deal with that, what you're going to need to do is think about the whole picture that you want to get the best reading from all five of the sensors that you have in the five and one sensor array.

Rocky Hardpan Property

Rocky Hardpan Property Not Good For a Weather Station

Now the first thing you're going to do is this is an exaggeration, but you obviously don't want to have it around rocks because rocks and soil will generate some extra heat.

Now, there won't be any evaporation, but you can't have it near trees. So this is just a strange example that I wanted to show you started out with just thinking about hardpan.

What we call hardpan is something to stay away from. It will lead to some maybe false readings. Readings that aren't the best for you. Why you say is because you want the best results from your wireless weather station.

You can watch my video for a better exposure, to what it takes to place your weather station properly.

Placing a weather station is never an easy thing.

However it is a very important thing in getting the best results from your weather instruments.

Stay Away From Rocky Ground With Your Weather Instruments

So as you walk around your property, you may have something that looks like this, like a rocky area under a tree, but just off this, there might be some grass in an area that's open.

Just think about first, you have to think about the evaporation that comes from a tree.

You got to think about the shade and you don't want it to be in a sunfield, but you don't want it to be totally in shade either, because the rain gauge has to be out in the open a bit to get collect rain.

But you also don't want to have the tree interrupting anything as far as any of the readings. So that would be something you'd want to stay away from too.

Now, this is an example of an open field area. That's what I call hardpan.

It's like shrubs and brush and hard soil, some rocks, small rocks, but really no grass cover.

Should You Place a Weather Station Under A Tree

Should You Place a Weather Station Under A Tree

How About An Area Of Water On Your Property

This is more of an open area, but you're dealing with the river here, and this could be dealing with a lot of evaporation on hot days or also with the mountains and the clouds here.

I suspect you'll be getting a lot of rainfall in this area if you own this home, have this tool shed, and whatever

placing a weather station

You Can Place Your Weather Station By Using Our Site Evaluation Worksheet

So the thing you might want to be thinking about is finding a space.

It's a little bit out in the open, maybe a corner of a barn roof, something like that, a corner of a tall shed.

We're going to get it out in the open a bit, and that's just an area to think about.

I guess think about the water and the evaporation and then with the mountains, the wind because I think usually mountains create wind tunnels coming off them in strong conditions that you often want to have the right measurements from.

But you also don't want it to be interrupting other readings you have coming from your weather sensor.

Now, this is like the scenario we're going to be looking at in the presentation of mounting an AcuRite Iris at my son's property and you'll see in the videos there that we do have a pond on his property.

Now it's smaller than this but it's still enough that for evaporation like that you don't want to put a weather station down by the pond itself or near the trees where you would want more of an open situation so just something to think about.

Now, a creek running through your yard. This probably isn't going to affect much of anything because probably sometimes in the year it will be dried, dryer, or dried up a little bit.

But in the spring when snow is melting, if you have snow you might have run off, there might be some things in here that might affect your weather station.

I would just say probably try to stay away from things to think about with the weather station that you want to think that the transmission is probably up to 300, 330ft away from your home.

You don't want to have trees or large rocks or anything like that.

Interrupting power lines, electrical sources of power, generator, anything like that.

Probably want to stay away from them as far as being in direct contact between your display inside your home and the sensor array outside.

Now there's another thing. You probably don't have this kind of thing.

This is more like a park. But I just want to show you the kind of soil that could be.

There are some of these on bulb plants that come up like Jonquills or Daffodils, and just hardpan areas under a tree. You don't really want to have your personal wireless weather station in that kind of situation either.

This is probably more like a real situation that you might have.

You might have some rolling grass that maybe you don't cut that often.

That probably won't affect anything too much as long as the grass doesn't get too tall.

Grass By River

Grass By River

Tall Rough Grass

Tall Rough Grass

Maybe This Is Your Yard, Placing Your Weather Station Tips

So that looks like an area where you maybe could put something that's out in the open a bit that's away from the trees here's some rocks.

But this grass, if you mow it five to six times a year, would be all right to put something in space like this.

Tallgrass, like a spare lot, a vacant lot between homes. Sometimes the grass gets kind of tall.

That, again, could affect the reading on a weather station near it due to the fact that there's a lot of evaporation, especially when it rains.

There's a lot of moisture coming off and there's a bank, an area probably 5 to 10ft above the ground, where there's a lot of evaporation happening.

In the morning this type of lot creates a lot of ground fog as well. So the grass is short grass, but it's hardpan scrub, short grass, medium size grass, or tall grass.

We've covered all the things to be looking for for a difference in evaporation in your yard.

Now here's something this yard looks more like something I've seen.

Vacant Lot Tall Grass

Vacant Lot Tall Grass

This is an area that may look like a lot that you own, maybe an area close to your house to take better care of.

Maybe an area where there are trees and stuff you don't mow as often.

We'd want to find something that's like an open area like this that you could put a weather station in because it's not going to be affected by any small buildings around where water is evaporating off roofs after the rain or sun is reflecting off the size of buildings.

Again, you don't want to put it underneath any of these trees.

But an area like here, an open area would be all right where it's shaded at times.

The Forest Floor

The Forest Floor

Is Your Yard Like A Forest Floor?

Is it like a forest floor where there's a tall grass with leaves that collect tall grass back here?

That's probably not your situation, but is that a good situation to put a weather station in?

Well, that depends, I guess, on how open that is or how close it is.

Look at the picture here. In a minute was closed.

This is more closed. But then again, these are conifers that grow straight up.

Maybe that's something that you want to think about is I wouldn't put it in this kind of thing.

A forest floor where there's probably a lot of evaporation, A lot of sun, and a lot of wind that tunnels through here. So you're going to get some kind of inaccurate.

Not that you would want to do that. Just saying these are types of examples of flora and fauna, the ground surfaces that you want to be aware of.

Now, this would be more of a situation.

This again looks like the edge of a very large property or a park. Again, grass-like this where it's just kind of spaced out would be all right to put on.

It wouldn't be too rocky. It wouldn't be too grassy. The grass isn't too tall and it's not near shade trees or buildings.

So that would be an area you can look at as well.

Now, this is probably a more realistic look for some people.

You may have a yard that's harbored in with bushes that are trimmed in paths here and all this.

So where would you want to put a weather station here?

Well, probably not on the sun side and probably we're still going to get moon exposure.

Maybe like the Eastside for exposure to a sunny morning.

But the South and the Southeast, to the Southwest, would be lesser coverage, and definitely, the Westside shining brightly against something you wouldn't want that exposed a long period of sunshine either.

Tall Shrubs In Yard

Tall Shrubs In Yard

A Nice Yard, How Would Your Weather Instruments Work Here?

But this is just something again, you might want to look at as far as the situation here. A nice situation, a backyard.

Now, I probably wouldn't place a water station anywhere in this area because of the different types like conifers and shrubs and bushes.

They're all going to cause evaporation and collecting of rain, where things are going to get damper than normal and because it's heavily shaded. There's a lot of moss in these areas.

So that means that it doesn't get a lot of open-air and a lot of ventilation. So I would stay away from this.

Because this could affect a humidity reading.

In this situation we want to place it near this building or the front of the building, or near the shaded areas here.

Mounting Weather Station Location

Mounting Weather Station Location

Maybe an area like here coming down towards the bottom here and maybe an open area where you could place something. Now, this would be a good situation.

Not exactly this picture, but it looks like this opens up more towards the bottom of the picture.

I wouldn't put it near the water or the trees or these plants because again, plants breathe.

They emit carbon dioxide. And so there's a lot of plants growing here, a lot of plants breathing.

So I would probably stay away from that. Go back towards more of an open area.

The open area might be something like this, except this is Sunfield here, probably a little bit too much.

So I don't know which way the sun is facing, which way this is facing.

But if you want to do a roof for this weather station in this area here, there are no trees or foliage.

You could probably do that. Just remind you, though, if you're going to go off a rooftop, you want to go 10 to 15 feet above the roof because the roof will gather heat from the sunlight.

Same with this area. Depending on how much sun you would know how much sun these areas get.

An open area here, maybe, I don't know, an area a little bit where it's not quite shaded. Maybe this is only shaded an hour a day.

That might work because trees are off to the left here. So that might be something to look at.

I've Been Around This Type Of Lot My Whole Life

This yard looks very familiar to me. This would be like a driveway here and there's an old tool shed down here, some trees, and you've got some rough areas here that you have, some areas that you mow and keep trimmed up.

So you could maybe put something, maybe something in here in the corner, again, depending on the sunlight that it gets, as well as being open so it can collect rain properly too, and also deal with thinking about the wind and where the wind direction is coming from.

Also, look at how much sun you're getting, and the ground cover for evaporation.

I don't see anybody water here. Keep in mind that roads and stone roads do gather more heat.

The roads are lighter, so they reflect more heat, so they're not absorbing the heat, but they're reflecting off.

So the heat, if you were to actually look at the therms coming off from the ground is probably seven, eight-foot off the road coming up.

That is something that would be close in this area, close by to those terms would be affected for the temperature gives you a false rating for the real temperature in your areas.

This AcuRite set of directions or the Sensor Array manual gives specifics about the sensors housed with the array.

Many things are part of the total weather station. In this 5-in-1 wireless sensor, you have the rainfall collector funnel, it has a solar cell panel, and an internal aspirating fan to reduce solar radiation heating.

This unit also houses temperature and humidity sensors.

Also included is the mounting hardware. which includes 5 anchors and a set of 3 different screws.

Included as well is a debris filter for your rain collection pan.

A very worthwhile thing is the filter. It will filter out flying leaf debris and bird feces, etc, all things that could affect the rain gauge readings.

As you can see the Sensor Array is the collection of weather instruments that you receive with the AcuRite Iris 5-In-1 weather station.

You should start the setup process by sorting out where you plan on having the display (inside) indoor part of the weather station.

It is usually best to put the display unit somewhere that you will have daily and maybe hourly access to it.

Some people like heavily traveled rooms such as the kitchen, dining room, and offices, and some like hallways.

Maybe a shelved area near the front door or some prefer a family room?

I don’t know maybe a bedroom? A Living Room?

Next Where To Mount The Weather Station’s Sensor Array

Now comes the outside part of the AcuRite Iris.

Where are you going to locate the instruments that will do all the heavy lifting for you?

Hours and days of providing you with your weather.

The mounting will be handled by walking your property and figuring out the best spot for you to locate the outside Sensor array.
