Things the Parents Should Know to Help Use This Weather Tool Correctly.

The forecast is zeroed in to specifically give you the most accurate forecast for where you live.

Not 30-40 miles away or a regional forecast but a hyperlocal weather forecast. It contains a self-calibrating weather forecast technology that is special for where you live.

The forecast is updated every 12 hours.

Next, the readings provided to you are an outside weather thermometer, this has a trending up or trending down arrow which is seen beside the temperature reading as it is presented.

It also shows you a comparison to yesterday's weather as well.

A freeze indicator also provides information for you on screen.

Last to consider is this is a wireless weather station from AcuRite.

No need to go outside all sensor information is sent to your inside display consistently.

It is updated every 30 seconds as the day moves on.

It has battery backup and in case of a power outage, you will still receive the weather readings as well as the alarm clock will still go off as set.

AcuRite Weather Station

What About The Sensor Unit, The Weather Stations Array

The sensor array, which is the outdoor part of the weather station is the home to a temperature sensor as well as a self-calibrating sensor that diagnoses the weather elements such as relative humidity and temperature fluctuations to determine the forecast it gives you the inside weather station display.

These signals are sent via wireless transmission and updated every 30 seconds.

The information will provide a freeze warning on your inside display as the temperature is definitely at 32 degrees F.

This array must be hung up at least 4-8 feet above the ground and ideally in a shaded area as well.

My Arguments Against Buying the Acurite 00777 What To Wear Wireless Weather Station

CONS

  • The display is sometimes hard to read. If you have bright light, like lots of sunshine in the room it is very hard to read.
  • It is hard to read from a severe to moderate angle. Best if looked almost straight on.
  • Some people have reported being disappointed in the dressed icon sometimes not matching the weather forecast. I have not experienced that at all.
  • The display is often hard to read. It does not have a backlight. Since the display is powered by batteries the light only will come on if you push down on the large button along the top of the display. If it was powered by electricity and a power cord it would be lit up all the time.

Best Weather Station For Kids

What a Best Weather Station For Kids Looks Like

In my search for best weather station for kids, I will take you through 3 key areas in this article.

  • In my search for what the best weather station for kids is, I knew that it had to teach the child something.
  • It had to also instill in the kid a come back to it (Stickiness). They needed to have enough interest that what a weather station would provide for them would be something that they could use and benefit from. It would be useful to them throughout their life.
  • I also knew that the weather station needed to be good enough that the child could use it and use it over and over again and it wouldn't break and become useless to them. It needed to become a "counted-on friend" to them.

Where Did I Search and Find the Best Weather Station For Kids

So in my search, I did find that many companies have worked on and released some weather stations to fill this need.

Later on, I will make some suggestions from my experience and research.

Major companies such as AcuRite, Davis Instruments, Ambient haven't really gone into the kids market.

However, La Crosse does have a weather station that will appeal to a young lady who has an interest in the sciences and weather instruments.

La Crosse Technology WS-9782U-IT Wireless Temperature Station with Advanced Weather Girl Icon

So where did I find my suggestions? Well, I found them being sold on the world's largest marketplace, amazon.com.

I believe have a few choices that will excite, teach and create interest in your child.

My First weather station

What Will Your Child Learn?

Our weather produces our climate. Climates vary as you travel around the world.

I know you will find that the basics of weather never change.

These basics are listed as temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and humidity

I would say the instruments in the best weather station for kids, a choice would then need to include a thermometer, a hydrometer, an anemometer, and a wind vane.

They will get to measure these conditions from their own backyard.

However, some of the products that I found go in the direction of teaching some of the laws of physics that apply as well as working with providing some experimentation creating weather happenings in a limited variety to teach the principles of what happens in weather events.

Older teenagers learn how these various weather phenomena relate to each other and the laws of physics.

These weather events range from lightning to hurricanes, tornadoes, and to different types of precipitation such as sleet, snow, hail, rain, etc.

Some Questions For Kids With Personal Weather Stations

1. Do you think measuring the weather is important? Why or why not?
2. How do you think different weather conditions feel?
3. What's your favorite weather condition to experience?
4. How do you think the weather affects our moods?
5. When do you think it's important to measure the weather?

You could also have kids relate to and learn from answering questions like:

1. Ask them how they think temperature works.
2. Have them give you examples of everyday items that have temperature measurements on them.
3. Compare and contrast Celsius and Fahrenheit measurements.
4. Ask them to tell you about their favorite weather conditions, and why they like those particular weather conditions the best.

If these questions don't work to peak the interest you need from the kids as students you could try these questions. See what you think.

1. What's your favorite weather?
2. Why do you like that weather?
3. How does the temperature feel today?
4. What's the temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit?
5. How many degrees is it hotter than yesterday?

I am sure these will inspire interest and get you to feedback from your kids. Give it a try.

Here Are Some Tips On Choosing The Right Weather Station For Them

In this part, I want to discuss things that you need to know about to correctly make wise choices for the best weather station for kids.

Your kids and their future is very important to you.

You want the best for them, so follow this information, it will allow you to make a solid list of what you will be looking for when making your selection.

This section will discuss the importance of correctly placing weather station measurements tools in order to collect accurate temperature readings.

Accurate temperature readings are important as they provide valuable information about the weather.

The most common types of weather station measurements tools are thermometers, barometers, and hygrometers.

Thermometers measure the air temperature, barometers measure air pressure and hygrometers measure relative humidity.

The placement of these tools is crucial for accurate results because some factors such as wind speed and direction can affect the data collected by these tools.

Weather and atmosphere data resources found on the NOAA site have many resources to use to help educate children about the weather.

This will be from a nation and world point of view.

It will help your child learn how to measure different weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and rainfall. You may go to

Weather and atmosphere data resources page

Some Other Things To Think About With Choosing A Weather Station

Younger kids are fascinated by the simplicity of a weather station.

A weather station is an easy way to teach kids about the basics of weather. The most basic stations include thermometers, rain gauges, and wind meters.

These devices are interactive and fun for children to use.

They can learn about temperature changes, rainfall, and wind speeds without having to travel outside their home.

The sensors on a weather station can be the key to finding the perfect balance.

When choosing a station for your children, it's important to take the type of sensor into account.

The more accurate and in-depth the sensor is, the better your child will be able to learn while still having some fun.

primary school weather station

The Design of the Best Weather For Kids Needs To Be Considered

What else should you be thinking about? Just make sure that what they’re getting will look realistic.

If it’s a real instrument, make sure that it’s digital with readable indications.

If the product is designed for kids as a weather learning toy type weather set, then you need to make sure you should consider just how realistic the chosen weather set is.

Your kid should know what a real anemometer with cups looks like based on their device.

If you’re getting them a real weather station, make sure it’s digital with readable information on the console.

Durability Can Be An Issue As Well

For children, durability is a major issue, so we recommend that you avoid electronic personal weather stations.

Instead, look for a model where you and your child can build it together, or is made of a few parts and easy to install.

If you are willing to invest in a weather station, we recommend the following models: The Davis Instruments 6152 Vantage Pro2 Wireless Weather Station and the Davis Instruments 6250 Vantage Vue Wireless Weather Station:

These weather stations have an LCD screen with an alarm that is easy for children to understand.

For example, if the temperature is below -5 degrees Celsius, it will alarm if this is a critical level.

Now is the time to take a close look at a handful of weather station-type products that I believe may help your child learn about the weather.

Take some time and examine what these products offer the student.

A Look At the Terms & Conditions Of This Program (Overview)

What you need to know if operating this, the WeatherBug for Schools is a network of automated weather stations throughout the world collecting and reporting data to a central database that would serve as an important resource for studying global weather patterns and tracking weather systems.

An extension of this network is the Earth Networks® Schools Program, which involves schools and colleges in the study of weather and provides educational tools to aid in this study.

Earth Networks® and GLOBE The Earth Networks® Schools Program allows schools to use weather stations to collect and report atmospheric data.

Since the function of Earth Networks® Schools is in line with that of GLOBE, it is possible for a school to participate in both programs simultaneously.

A GLOBE school that is participating in the Earth Networks® Schools the program may have the data that they collect with an Earth Networks® weather station transferred automatically to the GLOBE database.

To become part of the WeatherBug Schools Program, call an Education Representative at 1-800-544-4429, Ext. 2, or

Weather Instruments For Kids-How To Better Use In the Month of May

Weather Instruments For Kids Activity Picks Up In May

As I progress through the year in weather, the month of May is next. Weather instruments for kids activity become much more interactive this month.

weather instruments for kids

With the month of May, you will be able to share the plush green earth’s awakening from a deep winter’s sleep with your favorite child.

Using weather instruments to show them how the warmer air and higher sun angles make for a whole new set of weather situations that need to be explained.

It is wondrous with the opening of leaves, of the blossoming of lovely flowers, and all the delights of the new leaves of the trees.

So it is also a time of sweet lovely smells, and new vibrant colors, and the fresh airs of spring.

Explaining Heated Weather Activities With Weather Instruments for Kids

So you may start out by explaining the following activities created by springtime weather patterns.

Using the weather station readings from your favorite 5-in-1 weather station, or your new 3-in-1 weather station will help the kids around you understand what is happening around them daily.

I am going to explain three springtime weather things that you may use to perk up your kid’s interest in weather instruments.

  1. Tornadoes are usually more predominant in the spring, in April and May
  2. Thunderstorms start popping up both in the day-time and night-time in May
  3. Collecting of heavy rainfall amounts

Okay, so I am going to look at these three May weather situations and the weather instruments for kids that are used to involve their skills, thinking abilities, and interest in the weather.Weather Instruments For Kids

Involving them in studying the weather will help their critical thinking skills, which will make them better, responsible citizens of their communities and the overall world they live in.

Instruments For Helping Understand Tornadoes

The interest in tornadoes can be either you know enough for survival, or you can be a helper in warning the general public, or you can be the extreme where people become storm chasers.

Instruments involved will be the thermometer, the anemometer, and the barometric pressure.

Most 5-in-1 weather stations have the necessary weather instruments to help kids understand how to be aware of a tornado warning at the least.

Conditions present would be dropping in the barometric pressure, a rapid increase in the wind with higher wind gusts, and then very cloudy and heavy rain conditions.

In general, it is usually much more complicated than this but if you develop a conversation about what a tornado is and use weather instruments to become aware of possible weather conditions. Then the tornado discussion will one day be useful information to a kid.

I have written an interesting article about tornadoes, Tornado Alley Season Starts-So What About It?.

Studying Thunderstorms With Kids

May is when the temperatures are getting much warmer in your locale. With this increase in sun angle and the increase in the extreme differences between a cold front (a high-pressure system) and a warm front (a low-pressure system), you will be getting a ramped-up thunderstorm activity in your locale in the month of May.

This is usually very noticeable as we haven’t seen thunderstorms for probably the last 6 months.

A note of interest to you as a weather fan, they actually have the scientific tools (sensors) now that can detect lightning strikes for you on your weather station.

Acurite makes a Lightning Detector for their weather stations. This is mentioned by me in the post-AcuRite 5-in-1 Weather Station Reviews Used To Examine the 01535M.

At the bottom area of that post, you can read more about the AcuRite 06045M Lightning Detector Sensor.

A very interesting item to have on your weather station. Kids can see how far away a lightning strike was, and it also shows how many of the strikes occurred during the thunderstorm you just experienced. All of these activities are fun for the children.

Increased RainFall Collection Activity

The last point to be made with your child for the month of May is the collection of the rain with the rain gauge on your weather station.

You are coming out of the colder months where the precipitation often was in the form of ice, hail, freezing rain, and snow. The weather station doesn’t handle measuring these forms of precipitation very well.

Snow just sits in the rain gauge, freezing rain once it melts will be a small amount of rain to be measured.

So keeping all of this in mind, this is now a great opportunity to be using the rain gauge in full force as it is designed to be used.

Please note we are talking about my climate, where I live. Many of you get the opportunity of having many, many more months to be using your rain gauge.

You need to be able to explain to your child how your weather station’s rain gauge works. Most work on the same principles, but some are more effective in being used than others.

How much money was spent on the weather station generally determines the value of how good the rain gauge will do its job.

Spring Weather Progress
Spring Weather Progress- a Comparison From April To May

There are some rain gauges that have features that will add to their effectiveness in doing their job.

The weather stations will show how much rain has been collected in the last 24 hour period and at the rate per hour it rained.

You Can Have an Informed And Excited Weather Kid This May

May does present itself as a pretty, and interesting month for weather. I have presented 3 ways you may involve your kid in using weather instruments for kids to teach your child about these prime weather types that are usually very important to the average person.

If you are just living in your climate this May then remember what you are teaching your child now will last with him or her a lifetime.

I still remember teaching points that my science teachers stressed while learning in middle school and high school.

Long ago, but not forgotten.

Kids Interest In Weather-How To Best Introduce Your Child to the Weather

The First Steps Towards Growing Kids Interest In Weather

So your child has expressed an interest in the weatherman on TV. He or she is enamored with being a weatherman.
So how do you go about building your kid’s interest in the weather?

Your child may even like to pretend they are doing the weather on TV.

Maybe your child just has enjoyable activities that include being outside in the weather. Or maybe

your kid has shown any interest in rain, snow, wind, etc. Then maybe they are a young aspiring meteorologist. How can you best bring that out in your middle school child?

If your child is indeed keen on weather activities then you need to get them around things that have to do with following the weather daily.

As an example, you could start keeping a diary for your child or should I say with your child. Get them doing activities with you.

Building your kid’s interest in the weather should involve your effort as well.

So your active interest in doing something they enjoy being involved in is of the utmost importance to them succeeding in building their goals into accomplishments.

Examples Of Building Kids Interest In Weather Using Activities

Here are some great activities to get you out and about and to give your child or children some reason to be involved in weather and weather activities.

  • Go for a hike in the great outdoors. Involve walking in a very different area from what they have ever been exposed to. This will probably make them a bit uncomfortable as they are beyond their normal expectations. They will learn more as their senses are heightened
  • Set up a Wind Sock to demonstrate the wind direction at any given time and place. This is an easy yet very effective and fun activity for learning.
  • You can set up a simple rain gauge at a location out in the open at your home. This will give you precipitation amounts over 8,12, or 24 hour periods, whatever you decide are periods of time you wish to break down weather facts into. If you are recording it will be an exercise the child will enjoy and they will fully now realize that history will tell a story.
  • You can have your child help you plan out an outside activity. This activity will involve checking out the weather. Such examples could be planning a family picnic, planning a trip to a state park, or a golf match with a friend. They could also plan out a tennis match as well.
  • They could work for the growing season with you on setting up a garden. They could see how intricate the weather is with timing around things like when to do the weeding. Also when to do the planting, when to do the harvesting. All of these are affected by the weather. Another great example would be to plan out whether to water the garden or is it going to rain and how to protect the garden from a very cold night.

A Weather Tracker Makes Things Easier

Learning Resources Weather TrackerLearning Resources Weather TrackerLearning Resources Weather Tracker

To help them with tracking the weather better and to make it fun as well would be a great thing to increase the learning curve.

If you can hook fun in with the learning experience they will enjoy the tracking and recording activities. They will not fight you on doing this, nor will they question you on it is an important thing to do.

Plus they will be developing a great habit which will pay off in big benefits down the road. They will be growing bigger and better gardens, they will not be getting rained off on things they have planned to do. They will be able to work around and with the weather for their benefit and pleasure. A very useful duo purpose.

To help them with tracking the weather better and to make it fun as well would be a great thing for you to accomplish.

They should look at buying themselves one of these Learning Center Resource Weather Trackers. They are really cool, easy to use, and provide easy to use, easy to do, and very useful tracking ability.

Weather Stations For Kids-Your Ultimate Guide

Books That Could Capture Your Child’s Imagination About Weather

When you have younger children, the challenge to get them to focus is a real thing. Kids often are here and there and everywhere with their attention.

One way we used to get our kid’s undivided attention was by either reading a book to them or by watching a video with them.

Our challenge was always making sure that they were following a subject or an area that we could use as a learning experience. I always found their minds to be fresh to new things like a sponge.

Make those impressions good ones. Help them to learn things they need to be learning. Here are a couple of books that come highly recommended.

They are written by the Canadian Meteorologist Janice Dean, who currently serves as co-host and weather anchor on Fox and Friends weekday mornings. She has written these children’s books from the perspective of a meteorologist.

In Summation for Ideas to Bring Weather to Kids

It’s important that our children are taught about the weather they live in. If they learn about it they will understand and respect it.

Those who are really interested in how it works and why it works will be on their road to success as weather people if we as parents and grandparents do our job and cultivate an exciting interest in the weather sciences.

Start them young, expose them to their weather. The weather will always be there with them, why not have them understand it. Always remember how important it is to work on kids’ interest in the weather.
