Exploring the Types Of Cyclones

Most people don’t realize that the word “cyclone” actually refers to several different types of storms. Some of them occur over land, while others occur over water.

You will find, what all of the different types of cyclones have in common, is that they all spin around low-pressure centers.

Also, the difference between high pressure and low pressure always plays a major component in the formation of all cyclones.

This article will offer an introduction to the different types of storms that can be considered cyclones to help clear up some of the confusion surrounding these uncommon, but fascinating weather phenomena.

The Eye of the Storm

What differentiates all of the different types of cyclones from other inclement weather events is that they all rotate around what’s often called the “eye” of a storm.

The eye of the storm creates the eerie calm often associated with cyclones.

While the storm’s eye remains almost completely calm, the areas surrounding it can be incredibly hectic as a cyclone’s spinning “arms” create a maelstrom of wind and rain.

A Storm By Any Other Name

Not only does the word cyclone actually refer to a variety of different kinds of storms, but in certain regions what’s called a cyclone would be known as something else.

Storms that fit this description in the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Northeast would be called hurricanes, for example.

In the Pacific Northwest, the same kind of storm would be known as a typhoon. Elsewhere in the world like in the South Pacific or the Indian Ocean, it would simply be called a tropical cyclone.

No matter what name these storms are given, they’ll still wreak havoc with the areas that effectively become part of the local weather.

The high winds, the cyclonic action, as well as the copious amounts of rain, are generally the weather actions that raise heck within the areas these storms strike in.

Tropical Cyclones

When most people think of cyclones they’re almost always thinking of tropical cyclones, which occur over oceans in tropical regions.

The hurricanes of the Pacific Northeast and the typhoons of the Pacific Northwest are formed in the same way as tropical cyclones.

Geography Causes the Name to Be Different

But they are different, because of where they are located geographically in the world. So then I can conclude that when I hear the term tropical cyclone, it is actually talking about, a storm that is occurring or has occurred in the South Pacific or in the Indian Ocean.

So a tropical cyclone can be called three different names right off the mark.
Tropical cyclone names are

Typhoons
Hurricanes
Tropical Cyclone

Also, you should know that tropical cyclones are categorized according to wind speed so it’s also common to hear a weatherman refer to a category one, two, three, four, or five cyclones.

Category one cyclones may be weaker than category two storms, but they can still do some serious damage.

Winds have to reach between 74 and 95 miles per hour for a storm to even be considered a cyclone.

Needless to say, category five cyclones, with winds that reach upwards of 155 miles per hour in speed, can do a substantial amount of damage.

With these storms, often they will be, both radically strong wind events, as well as many of these, bring hundreds of millions of dollars of personal property damage to an area.

Often power losses result, as well as large areas of flooding are par for the course.

Polar Cyclones

As the name implies, polar cyclones occur only in very cold regions like Siberia, Greenland, and the Antarctic. They’re most active in the winter but unlike tropical cyclones, they tend to affect less populated areas.

The damage from polar cyclones tends to be minimal so it’s rarer for inhabitants of tropical or temperate climate zones to hear about them on the news.

Mesocyclones

This type of cyclone can be thought of like the bridge between a thunderstorm and a tornado. This is easy enough to remember once you are armed with the knowledge that “meso” actually translates to “middle.”

Not all mesocyclones lead to tornadoes, but tornadoes can’t form without them. In order for tornadoes to occur and begin touching down on the ground, the clouds associated with a thunderstorm have to start spinning and form a mesocyclone.

This intermediary stage in the formation of tornadoes isn’t typically visible from the ground since it occurs in the clouds, themselves.

Mid-Latitude Cyclones

Okay so this area is a bit tricky, I will give it my best shot. The second part of this will be covering Bomb Cyclones, which have been in the news lately.

The Midwestern area of the United States was ravaged by a record-setting bomb cyclone on Wednesday, March 13, 2019.

Further discussion is needed to understand this very large, intense weather situation.
How A Mid-Latitude Cyclone Is Formed

Mid-latitude cyclones form only occasionally, but usually the extreme temperance differences between what the Northern pole area of North America is producing versus what the Equator area of our hemisphere is producing.

As the temperature differences start to collide, these massive cyclones may form due to the dramatic uplifting of warm air over cold air. The more radically active this airlift is, the more clouds form and then you will have tremendous convection currents being built in. So this is definitely low-pressure system weather.

You can see in the picture below just how extraordinarily large these cloud formations become. As this happens there is a massive shift in the barometric pressure in the collision (convergence) area occurs.

An intense mid-latitude cyclone may have a surface pressure as low as 970 millibars, compared to an average sea-level pressure of 1013 millibars.

In fact, the Pueblo, Colorado, National Weather Service station recorded that the barometric pressure dropped to only 968 millibars of pressure.

This is very low and winds were recorded in Colorado Springs, Colorado at 97 mph.

In the normal formation and life of these huge weather events, each individual frontal cyclone will exist for about 3 to 10 days. Usually these travel in a west to east direction.

The Areas Where Mid-Latitude Cyclones Form

There are three major areas that very often present these specific conditions to form actual mid-latitude cyclones. You will need a low-pressure system weather setup.

Where these are usually produced, can be either in the Gulf Of Mexico, off the East coast of the United States, or thirdly, the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains.

The March 13th event formed in the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains in Eastern-New Mexico and Colorado area.

These cyclones are usually cold-weather events, which can lead to extremely tricky and treacherous driving conditions for huge areas of landmass. This was widely reported from the bomb cyclone of March 2019.

Many times, the mid-latitude cyclones will cover an area as large as reaching 625 to 1,600 miles (1,000 to 2,500 km) in diameter.

They also can pack winds up to 75 mph as an example of how severe they will be. Wind speeds were recorded at over 90 mph in many different states in this recent event.

With the wind gust being measured at 70 mph in Denver, and 89 mph in Dallas, Texas. This further proves how powerful the mid-latitude cyclones really are.

Many times these are larger wind events than they are wind and precipitation events. While heavy snows were recorded in areas, the major damages were from the cyclonic wind activity.

What are Bomb Cyclones?

These are also referred to as weather bombs, these cyclones actually are the same thing as what I just described up above.

They are mid-latitude cyclones. So as they are latitude dependent, usually a mid-latitude event as was described above as well.

So if you are looking for specifical information on what is a bomb cyclone, you can get the same information about it as you would searching for what is a mid-latitude cyclone?

So bomb cyclones form differently from tropical cyclones, but they are categorized in the same way on one to five numeric scales.

As with other major cyclones or hurricanes, bomb cyclones are now named as well.

Most people will never see a bomb cyclone since they are typically maritime, winter events. Very unlike what just happened in the midwest.

They can, however, still occur during other seasons and in continental settings, and when they do they bring heavy precipitation and often significant damage.

My Cyclone Summary

In summation you ask, “are all cyclones low-pressure system weather?”, the answer is definitely yes. The pre-requisites for all cyclones and cyclone activity is an area of low pressure where air masses meet and rise.

Secondly, also, a huge difference between low pressure and high pressure will exist as well. These conditions must be present to have a cyclone.

Whatever type of cyclone depends on seasons, latitude, as well as locations, they all play a large part.

So whether it is a mid-latitude cyclone, a hurricane, a typhoon, or a tropical cyclone.

New York State Weather in April

So what’s the deal with the weather for April. Where I have lived much of my life, the month of April is waking up month. Waking up from a deep winter’s sleep.

You see, in Western New York State, we start our winters in the mid-Autumn season (usually as early as October 18).

Then we usually, as a guide, look out for the possibility of a major winter event as late as mid-April.

This has always been a great rule of thumb.

We Have a Short Growing Season

If you are keeping score, that means that only May, June, July, August, September as the only months that we get to escape the winter weather.

So basically, this is our growing season from late May to mid-September.

We can experience killing frosts as late as Memorial Day, and sometimes as early as the mid-September dates near when fall starts on the calendar.

Weather in My Early Work Experiences

So with this as a background for my local weather, here are some reasons why I find it beneficial to use a wireless color weather station to help me out.

I consider myself to be a very normal guy, living a commonly lead life. I have worked hard in my life, and I grew up in a small town.

I do have farming and landscaping as past experiences in my earlier life.

I mention this because I have an interest in gardening, farming, and lawn care. I once owned a lawn maintenance business.

It was a one-man operation much of the time, but I was known to coerce my future wife and my brother to help me out at times.

With those experiences I found myself working around the present weather conditions much of the time.

How to Use Weather Instruments More Effectively In April

So winter is now over, the first thing people will do outside is probably clean up their yards. The yard will need to be raked, as well as any yard damage will be needed to be repaired.

Spring Lawn Cleanup — Here are a couple of images of what I need to clean up after the driveway snowplowing this past winter.

Stones need to be raked back into the driveway. Then they need to be smoothened (leveled) out.

This will make the lawn surfaces stone and pebble free, then the grass is free to start growing again, unencumbered.

HOW I USE WEATHER INSTRUMENTS HERE
Watch for a sunny forecast. You will notice any barometric pressure changes. Any increases in barometric pressure will result in a fair day.

Probably a good drying day. a slight breeze, with sunshine. your instruments will be telling you on the wind speed weather stations, like the La Crosse Wind Speed Weather Station-327-1417 Weather Station.

I can set up an outside temperature alert so that when the temperature is above 60 degrees, I know then that ground is drying, and the lawn surface will be open to being raked.

Anything lower is too muddy, and parts of grass and yard will get that trampled on/packed down look.

You will be daily monitoring how wet your ground (soil) is. When it gets a bit drier, you can start raking. another thing, you look for is not only the temperature but if you are going to be receiving any rain today. It is always best to not have any rain until at least 24 hours after you have raked.

If it rains any quicker than that the yard will not be able to breathe and toughen up as quick as you will like to have it do.

However, there are its detractors as well. I go through and give you a list of pros and cons for this Wi-Fi color home weather station.

I did find that, if you are keenly psyched by the weather this is Your Weather Equipment. You may have a hard time walking away from all of its options.

After a thorough look over, this is definitely a must-be-considered choice for a serious weather station for you.

Description

The Ambient Weather WS-1002 Observer is the updated version of the WS-1001 Observer. One main thing has been changed. It has to do with the power source for the remote sensor array. I will discuss this in the pros and cons lists.

As I look at other ambient weather station reviews this one Ambient Weather weather station fits well for other reasons.

These reasons should be brought out into the light. Two things that are really inspiring to the avid weather fan are the

the amount of data that is provided
the ability to store, assemble and put together reports of historical significance

These reports over time could become very interesting and valuable for studying your local weather.

Features Including Instrument Sensors

The observer is accurate, precise, and affordably priced; it transmits 915mhz from the outdoor sensor array and indoor temperature sensor
The display console sends and receives internet data using Wi-Fi connectivity

The observer transmits outdoor temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, UV, and solar radiation from the all-in-one sensor array. All in one present the following set of weather instruments to you, for your study.

Wind direction vane
Wind speed cups (an anemometer)
Solar collector to run the sensors
Battery compartment for batteries for nighttime operation
Thermo-hygrometer with a solar radiation shield
UV sensor
Solar radiation sensor
Rain collecting gauge (self-emptying)
Wireless indoor thermo-hygrometer-barometer sensor
Bubble level to use to help level out the installation of the remote sensor array.

The observer also transmits indoor temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure from the indoor temperature array
The dew point and rainfall rate and a graph provide detailed trends for barometer, temperature, and humidity from your outside sensors and your instrument’s location.

Display

The display console facing the Ambient Weather WS-1002 looks like this. The display features a screen that displays historical archive data in the upper left-hand corner in the form of a graph.

The graph shows the following information. The graph shows the barometer, the temperature, and/or the humidity too.

Also, other key sections of information are presented on the colored console screen.

The numerous sections, present themselves to you as I describe them next.

Clockwise, next, you will see shown the wind direction and wind speed, then also along the top of the screen is the home to a current wind gust speed reading and the current wind speed.

Further down the right side of the console screen, you will find the inside humidity, the outside humidity, as well as the current outside dewpoint would be listed.

Then the calendar event readings, such as day of the week, month and date, and current year are in the lower right-hand corner.

Then, along the bottom, in a clockwise fashion, you will find the rest of how the console screen looks when observed by you.

You will have the current rainfall amount that has happened. Then it will also be listed in a “rain rate of inches per hour”. The current 24-hour rainfall total is listed as well.

Across the bottom towards the left-hand corner, you will find the current barometric pressure in HG.

Below that you will have the daily sunrise time, the moon phase for the day, and then the sunset time of that day as well.

Types of Transmission

So here is a shortlist of the pieces of transmission that are completed daily by the Ambient WS-1002 Observer

The weather station console connects via Wi-Fi to the router/internet
Sensor Array transmits with RF (Radio Frequency)at 915 MHz, to the display console inside the house
Wireless transmission from the remote sensor array to the color display console. Transmission is recommended up to 300 feet of unobstructed transmitting
The thermo-hygrometer-transmitter transmits directly to the console. Never set it up outside. The other big thing, is you need to set it up inside at anywhere from 5 feet to 20 feet away from the console for best results.

Dimensions

Home display console measures 7.75″ in length x 5.75″ in width x 0.75″ is the height
The LCD screen (the liquid-crystal display)for the console is measured at 6.25″ in length x 3.5” wide
Wireless indoor thermo-hygrometer-barometer sensor measures 2.5″ in height x 3.5″ in width x 1″ in depth
Sensor with Array of Ambient Weather Instruments for outdoors measures 12″ in length x 6″ in width X 14″ in height

Help In the Mounting

When thinking of mounting the Ambient Weather weather station, you will need to know about the pole diameters.

What is the inner diameter (it’s 1-1/4″) and outer diameter (it’s 1-3/8″) of the end that is supposed to connect to a pole? With these dimensions you will be able to connect, to set up your ambient weather mounting.

Please remember that included in the Ambient Weather weather station package are two pieces that will help get the mounting set up for you.

How Is It Powered

Indoor remote sensor: 2 “AAA” batteries
Outdoor sensor array: 3 “AA” Lithium or alkaline batteries.
The display console which is the heart and soul base of operations is powered by using the supplied 5-volt DC power supply cord. This power cord is approximately 6.5 feet in length

Batteries are not included for any of the necessary powering.

The very important thing to note here. Many people when looking at this weather station assume that the solar panel on the remote sensor array is charging up rechargeable batteries. That is not the case at all. The unit must be powered by batteries.

The batteries it takes are “AA batteries. For outside use, I always recommend Lithium batteries. They last much longer for outside use than regular alkaline batteries do.

The solar panel (when working) is basically powering the sensor array, but when there is no solar energy (like at night time) then the batteries are then powering the sensors.

Ambient Weather Software

The Ambient Weather software provides skill areas, which an Ambient Weather personal weather station owner can use to their advantage.

I am talking about the ability to get real-time, and past weather information generated by the devices the owner of the Ambient Weather WS-1002 Observer has set up on their property.

You are also able to hook up with the following apps or helpmates.

Wunderstation Ipad App
The Google Assistant program
Compatible with Alexa-“Alexa voice command system” using the Echo Dot

You can use the WunderStation iPad app certainly adds another dynamic but it is definitely an option.

So it works with Google Assistant too.

This will provide you with your outdoor weather report, but you can ask for your indoor weather report as well by saying, “Alexa, ask Ambient Weather about the indoor conditions”.

The WS-1002 has been improved over the Ambient Ws-1001 and what it represented in the weather instrument power source for the remote sensor array. Now in the WS-1002, the solar panel powers the sensor pack when there is solar power being generated. At night or when the solar power panel is not generating enough power, the “AA” batteries take over the job of powering the sensors.
You will have access to all data sent to Weather Underground. It may be uploaded in .csv files for storage on your home computer
Supports both Fahrenheit and Celsius measurements. Also supports all of the imperial (things are measured in feet, inches, and pounds) and metric measurements
NIST time synchronization you will have the correct time. Daylight Savings time updates are done automatically
you will be publishing real-time data to Wunderground.com 24 hours a day. It’s “Free” to do this
The rain gauge has a very large cup for rain gathering and direct flow in the actual rain gauge below. Because it is a small hole that allows the water through it, almost all any kind of debris cannot enter the rain gauge, thus the rain gauge will not get plugged up with debris.
You have the ability to set up then IFTTT type of mobile app inter-connectivity. The If It’s This The Its That apps.
This simply explains what and why you may be interested in IFTTT. The main IFTTT service is for automatic actions-things that you want to happen every time certain conditions are met without you needing to do anything

Cons For Purchasing the Ambient WS-1002 Observer

There isn’t an alarm clock function. Only alert-type functions are all-weather instrument related
It doesn’t track lightning activity
Large hail storms produce large hailstones that will damage the anemometers probably beyond use because they are made from plastic. So in severe weather conditions, you may experience some equipment failures
No current mobile phone app to tie into this live data. The system is only set up to directly communicate with Weather Underground.
Unable to set up push notifications to communicate alerts being set off
Not a good idea to use in a saltwater/ocean type environment, maybe not use at a beach house
You are unable to add other sensors to it, for other locations to be monitored
