La Crosse V-40-Pro Weather Station Unboxed Remote Monitoring Station

The Best Parts of La Crosse V-40-Pro Weather Station Unboxed

So the thrill of getting something new always comes with a rush of adrenaline. Well, it did this time for me. [toc]

La Crosse V-40-Pro Weather Station Unboxed

How exciting when I first cut the tape on my new La Crosse V-40-pro weather station. What makes it so exciting you may ask? Well, a great and fair question.

The reasons for my excitement are the following listed.

  • The first thing I am always excited about is checking out a new product from La Crosse Technologies. Their products are of excellent quality and produce an excellent body of results for you.
  • Secondly, I find their weather stations to be easy to set up and to use.
  • Thirdly, I know if I have any problems the people at La Crosse are great to work with.
  • And at last, I feel a kindred spirit to them in the sense that my wife and I visited their city (La Crosse, Wisconsin) and saw their headquarters in the last weekend of July 2018. You may read about our visit by going to George Loves Weather Visits La Crosse Scientific Technologies-Manufacturer of Weather Instruments

So Let’s Find Out What Is In the Box of the Lacrosse V-40-Pro

When the box is open the first thing that you will see prominently will be the multi-sensors unit, then there is the much smaller Thermo-Hygro sensor.
The multi-sensors unit is very large, the largest piece of this product set. The Thermo-Hygro sensor is much much smaller. They will be set up in different locations on your property.

Next, you will see protected in one corner of the box is the display screen. All of the readings are displayed for you here. Then you will also find two very important paper booklets.

One is the 6-page mini booklet with the explanation of how to set everything up, all instructions included are for setting up your new pro weather station.Inside the box of the V-40-Pro

A Quickstart Guide and a Smaller Sensor

First is the “Professional Remote Monitoring Weather Station Quick Start Guide”. This guide is basically three pages of simple well explained directions to get your V-40-Pro set up quickly and efficiently.

This guide will take you quickly through three basic phases for getting the two sensors operational.

The other Booklet is titled “Add-On Sensors”. The Add-on Sensors booklet is a booklet of other sensors that are available from La Crosse to add to your living quarters to enhance your lifestyle. This obviously is a sales brochure from La Crosse.

Some Observations of the La Crosse V-40-Pro

So I am always interested in the size of the actual real unit. Sometimes in some posts, the exact dimensions are not listed.

The real size is what you are dealing with so here are the dimensions as I measured upon opening the box.

  • The size of the shipped box with everything in it is 11 1/4 inches wide and the box is 14 inches long and it is 6 inches deep.
  • The bottom of the wind vane to the top of the anemometer is 8 inches.
  • The multi-sensor unit is 12 inches long and inches wide.
  • The display unit is measured at 6 inches by 8 inches by 1 inch.
  • The Thermal-Hygro sensor is measured as 2 inches by 6 inches.

My Unboxing Video

Here is my unboxing video. You can see for yourself how attractive the multi-sensor is and the display is a colored display that will be easily seen from different areas of the room it is set up in.

My Summation Of the Unboxing

So this is page one of the two posts that I have devoted to the La Crosse V-40-Pro weather station. My aim is to be as detailed as I would like to see if I were looking for information on this weather station so that I could make the best buying decision for me.

So you may go to La Crosse V40-PRO Weather Station-a Complete Review to read part II of the information I have for you on this new La Crosse weather station.

Cons for Purchasing the La Crosse Technology 327-1414W

The outdoor sensor uses “C Cell” batteries, So this means it uses regular “C Cell” batteries.

The shelf life the outdoors is much shorter than indoors. Thus, your batteries in the sensor will go dead quicker than Lithium batteries would.

It does not give the wind direction Can not connect to weather sharing sites like Weather Underground.

Can’t upload stored monthly collected data to your computer. The information gets recycled at the beginning of each month

The possibility of a temperature sensor giving a bad inside temperature reading. Reported up to 5 degrees too high.

It could be from inside heat building up in the sensor housing, which would give you an indoor temperature that is skewed higher than it should be.

Pricing Contributes to Purchasing

I will often look at the price and compare it to other similar products to see how they stack up together.

In looking at this model from La Crosse it does look like the extra $14 is worth the extra bells and whistles you will be receiving compared to similar La Crosse models.

I like the wind speed gauge that is front and center, top on the display.

Not only is the wind speed showing on a multi-colored wind speed gauge but right below it, it is shown as a large number that is easily picked out by my eye in glances at my station.

Also, with all other features on the screen, there is much information you will be fed constantly to keep you up to date on the climate changes outside in your world.

My Summary of the 327- 1414W

La Crosse Technology 327-1414W Color Wireless Wind Speed Weather StationLa Crosse Technology 327-1414W Color Wireless Wind Speed Weather Station

To me, the extra money is money well spent. I also have owned other La Crosse models and find what I own to be consistent operators and to be accurate in the readings they provide.

I know some people have had problems but I find that the majority (actually over 80%) of the purchasers are very happy with La Crosse weather stations.

I personally can vouch for the ease of setup, and maintenance in their stations. I believe this is a great buy for the middling weather person.

What I mean is the casual weather observer will not use most of what is provided by the La Crosse 327-1414W Color weather station.

But a person who has a good level of interest in weather will delight in all of the weather information that is provided by this unit.

I would be excited to receive this station as a gift from a loved one.

Pricing Contributes to Purchasing

When shopping for your first weather station this would fit the bill very well for you. If you are a casual weather observer looking for a great new solid working station this would be your choice.

Much is right about this unit from La Crosse. The positives outweigh the negatives by quite a bit. All of the weather information you are given satisfies my basic weather needs very well.

Also, I find the moon phases to be very useful to me, as the only way I usually get this information is to remember to check my wall calendar to see when the new moon and the full moon are for this month.

To have supplied all of the other moon phases I find to be cool and enjoyable to have. So to me, the price is very competitive to others and what I am receiving for value is very worth the price.

La Crosse Technology WS-9160U-IT Digital Thermometer Review

La Crosse WS-9160U-IT Digital Thermometer

My Review of the La Crosse WS-9160U-IT Digital Thermometer

Weather stations are really cool, but maybe you just don’t need something that complicated.

Would you be interested in having the outside temperature shown to you inside your residence?

If this is you, then this is just what you are looking for. The La Crosse WS-9160U-IT digital thermometer should fit the bill for you.

If you are shopping for a very good and reliable inside/outside weather thermometer this model from La Crosse is a great choice.

The monitor hangs on your wall, where you can easily glance at it and see very clearly the time and the inside/ outside temperature of your location.

If I have your attention so far, then read further as I take a detailed view of this digital weather thermometer.

Display

This is a digital thermometer with a wireless remote connection and a clock. You can use 3 remote sensors with this base monitor unit, so you can be seeing what the temperature is in three different places around your house or property.

These remote sensors are optional and must be purchased separately. [toc]The unit does come with one remote sensor but you must purchase separately the other 2.

The WS-9160U-IT has a manual time quartz clock that displays either in 12 or 24-hour time. Highlights of the unit are

  • Temperatures can be displayed in either Fahrenheit or Celsius
  • When set on a 12-hour time display it will read in Fahrenheit
  • When set on 24-hour time display it will read in Celsius

Also please be aware that dashes before the temperature readings mean the connection is lost between the Temperature Station and the outdoor sensor.

The display shows and records daily high and low temperatures. In order to access these temperature readings, you must press the MIN/MAX button to the toggle button between MIN and MAX settings.

You will see the letters MIN display on the lower left side of the screen and you should see the temperatures change accordingly to show the minimum temperatures.

Then you will need to toggle this display the MAX settings where the maximum temperatures are to be read. You may have to toggle the MIN/MAX button several times to go from MIN to MAX.

La Crosse WS-9160-IT Manual
La Crosse WS-9160-IT Manual

A couple of other things you should know. The thermometer system may be used in any number of ideal locations for you. Such as an RV or a boat or a playhouse, a lake cottage, or maybe even a hunting lodge. Just some ideas. The unit is run on batteries and with its size, it is very mobile to use.

The display colors areas are such. The front is white, the edges are black, and the back is all black as well.

Instrument Sensors

The sensors are mainly temperature sensors. Here is the range of their sensitivities.

  • Outdoor Temperature Range: -39.8 F to +139.8 F (-39.9 C to 59.9 C)
  • Indoor Temperature Range: 14.2 F to 139.8 F (-9.9 C to 59.9)

Type of Transmission

  • Transmission frequency: 915 MHz
  • This would be a good place to mention to be very cautious in buying extra remote sensors to use. You need to make sure the sensor that you buy to use also transmits in 915 MHZ.
  • Many sensors look like what you need, but the transmission frequency is not the match that is needed. Please read the specs on what you are purchasing to make sure they match up.
  • Indoor temperature checking interval every 15 second
  • Outdoor data checking interval every 4 second
  • Wireless transmission up to 330 feet

Consumer Ratings

When looking at this digital thermometer, the things that really stood out to me are the following. If you are thinking of purchasing this digital set from La Crosse please be reminded that this is not listed as a weather station. This is a really neat (cool) thermometer. What is the difference you may be asking?

You may have seen or heard a friend talking about theirs and the things it can do, and the information you are supplied.

Please look at this as only a one-tool weather unit. It will do a great job of giving you the outside/inside temperatures. That is it, you will not be getting wind speed nor relative humidity, or wind direction.

Secondly, you need to know that this will do the job for you but for how long no one really knows. Some people talk of having it work for up to 7 years.

But then many more will say theirs worked for anywhere between 2-5 years. Why the difference who knows?

One could suspect critical elements would be how and where it is used by the customer. Please follow the directions for the best results.

In reviewing many other La Crosse products it seems that they are popular, perform well, and people are repeat customers. It appears many customers have purchased this unit many times because they are very satisfied with the model.

Price

La Crosse Technology WS-9160U-IT Digital Thermometer with Indoor/Outdoor TemperatureLa Crosse Technology WS-9160U-IT Digital Thermometer

My overall view of this digital thermometer is that it is worth the money just from a fair price perspective. For the over $20 and Under $30 price point, you will be receiving the digital thermometer, one remote sensor, and the promise of receiving the outside temperature from a location outside.

This will work as an excellent starting point for all fun weather observers. Before I leave to do activities, I ask myself, what is it like outside? Hot or Cold?

So to the casual weather person, it works. If you want to branch out by adding other remote sensor locations it will be around another $20 for each sensor alone. So looking at that, the original purchase is a good deal.

This is the number 1 seller for outside thermometers on Amazon, and there are reasons it continues to sell so strongly. The fair price for the quality is what I would consider the biggest reason for buying.

Just make sure you will be really happy with just the temperature readings. If you are considering a unit with more options then maybe check out these simple weather stations we have reviewed.

The La Crosse 308-1412S interested me because it has the bells and whistles that I wanted as a casual observer of the weather.

I purchased it for my wife and other family members to use when visiting. It is very user-friendly, and the price is right as well.

Let’s take a much closer look at what the La Crosse 308-1412S is all about

This station is best suited for the casual weather observer. It’s the wife, the teenage kids, the busy husband, who all have in common the large lack of time.

They are also very very busy people, who just would like to access a few simple weather observations, very quickly before they head out to a scheduled event/date/business meeting.

The information they need to know is the current what’s it like outside, ie the temperature, the wind speed, (is it windy), and if it’s raining, snowing, icing, etc.

They don’t need past weather history or what it was 12 hours ago, etc, etc.

So who is the person who will get the most out of this climate unit? They are a gardener, an enjoyer of water sports, a snow skier, etc will also be able to take advantage of this wonderful unit from La Crosse.

Instrument Sensors

It has remote thermometer temperature sensors as well as sensors for relative humidity.

This unit does not have a barometer, an anemometer, nor does it record wind direction.

  • Indoor Temperature Range: 32 F to 122 F (0 C to 50 C)
  • Outdoor Temperature Range: -40 F to 140 F (-40 C to 60 C)
  • Humidity Range:19%-97% (RH)

I have found the transmission goes through two sets of walls to the remote sensor outside. The remote reports consistently without any problems.

Transmits in 430 MHz

Display

The main display monitor is white in color with a silver edge all the way around it.

It uses color animation for your future weather and trend indicators. It also uses a variety of colors to display your indoor to outdoor climate. I have found that as time goes that it learns about your environment.

How it works is this: the forecast station calibrates barometric pressure based on my location over a period of time to generate an accurate, personal forecast for me. The directions said to please allow 3 to 4 weeks for barometer calibration. I found that by week three the forecasting was working pretty well, consistently and accurately.

The display monitor also features programmable temperature alerts that will notify you of any extreme temperature change either indoor or outdoor, according to what you have set up to be alerted to.

What is also presented is 12/24 Hour time (manual setting) with snooze alarm, a day of the week, month, and date display is also present. There is also a low battery indicator.

The back of the monitor display houses a USB port where you will be able to charge your phone or your electronic device.

USB charging cable is not included and you are encouraged to read the specific directions and notices concerning the type of devices that can and can’t be used with this.

Please read page 5 of the 308-1412 manual PDF or the instructions that are included.

The forecast station is powered by 3-“AAA” batteries

For the remote transmitter, you should absolutely consider using Lithium batteries.

Lithium batteries work better and last much longer in the variable weather conditions and temperatures that are present outdoors.

Pros

✅ Colored screen can be read from a distance away
✅ Weather trending alerts-rising arrow (weather is improving) and falling arrow (weather may worsen)
✅ Color forecast icons: sunny, partly sunny, cloudy, rainy, stormy
✅ The forecast station uses changing atmospheric pressure to predict weather conditions
✅ For the next 12 hours with 70-75% accuracy
✅ Monitors both inside and outside temperatures for you
✅ Monitors % of Relative Humidity, and provides maximum and minimum readings
✅ Adjustable backlight dimmer- high-medium-low
✅ Sensor signal strength indicator
✅ Solid heavier plastic construction Seems like it would be difficult to break unless you are just abusive to it.
✅ Reports on screen in either Celsius or Fahrenheit, your choice

Cons

❌ The display screen while colored can only be seen from more or less straight on. As you angle away from the screen in different directions the screen cannot be seen at angles to the left or right
❌ the clock is not atomic
❌ Can’t be used to transmit data to online weather sites
❌ Can’t store data
❌ Can’t be wall-mounted. Only sets on a surface
❌ It is too dim for many people to read during the day and the night. If used only with battery power the backlight will dim down to the low setting after 10 seconds of being bright. You should consider keeping it plugged in a have it set at the brightness you desire

Consumer Ratings For the La Crosse 308-1412S

After studying this unit as well as observing my personal one in my office, I will be the first to tell you that I feel I made a very good decision. I enjoy the colored screen.

I am personally into weather much deeper, however, my wife does enjoy its presence and it’s always offering what is going on with the information it does provide.

It is easy to use, I found the directions to be well written, to the point, and easy for me to use to set my 308-1412 up.

It seems owners have the following major things to say. I thought it was larger, I wish I could mount it on the wall, I didn’t know it was white, etc.

Those to me are all things that can be answered for you by reading this review. The things I can’t satisfy you with are accuracy issues, transmission problems, or how long the parts will last.

It seems that all vary to the environment the equipment is used in, and also what the user/owner’s expectations are.

LA CROSSE TECHNOLOGY 308-1412S Color Weather Station by La Crosse TechnologyLA CROSSE TECHNOLOGY 308-1412S Color Weather StationUpon studying the model 308-1412S I believe that this is a very attractive choice for the casual weather fan. In checking out other models and other manufacturers, with this price range, this is a highly reliable model and well worth the money spent for what you are getting in return from La Crosse Technologies.

So if you are new to this, or you just need to glance at these few things that are presented and updated often for you, 24 hrs a day, then this will make a great gift, or a wonderful addition to your office, or family room, or maybe even your dining room/kitchen area.

But if you are a middle to serious weather person, this is much too simple, and you will want to research more choices with many more instruments with them.

You will be very disappointed in the fact that you want and need more in-depth weather information. Those choices are reviewed by me on other review pages.
