In my research on Amazon for this Davis 6152 Vantage Pro2 weather station, one certain thing was a common thread as I read hundreds of customer reviews.

The one thing that was very apparent was that a Davis weather station will last much longer on average than many models from its top competitors.

People talk of their past purchases lasting 10-12 years. This is really a stand out quality. Many other weather stations may last 5 years, but seldom is heard, the cry that I had my Weather Station for 10 years.

A remarkable testament to the Davis Instruments Company.

This rain collector can reduce wind-induced errors. It is designed to produce a more aerodynamic path for the area around the rain collector.

This design will also improve the rain collecting data for you. Especially in high wind situations.

It causes the rain to be able to settle into the collector cup instead of being blown over the cup, not being collected for measurement.

It is also designed to reduce dramatically inside the cup, the splash-out rate of the rain.

The new debris screen locks into place, ensuring that it remains in place during high winds and heavy rainfall events. The AeroCone comes standard with 2017 and later Vantage Pro2 stations (not compatible with Vantage Vue).

It can also be used as an extra sensor, which you can add to your weather sensory collection instruments.

Where Is the Real Value in the Davis Instruments 6163 Wireless Weather Station

As I was preparing to take a look under the hood of this weather station, the Davis Instruments 6163 Wireless Weather Station, I was really pondering some key points.

  • Point 1 would be, is a weather station worth that much more than another weather station? Is the value increase real or is it a perceived value difference to the new owner? Why would I pay over $1000 for a weather station compared to let’s just say a weather station costing you $139.95 currently on Amazon?
  • Point 2 If the value does increase is it worth all the extra expense, the real expense that it is going to cost you.
  • Point 3 So If the value is that much more for you then will you make the investment in yourself to obtain that markedly obvious added value.

Will you make the investment to the professional type of weather station you didn’t know you wanted but now after reading our detailed report on all that is there at your fingertips, then the investment will be very worthwhile for you to make.

“It is Exceptional Weather Equipment, You Won’t Be Disappointed!”

Let’s dig in.

Display

So now let’s take a serious look at the display console that is used. This alone would be enough to convince me of the 6163’s real value. Then further along after we look at the console, many other areas are discussed and you can see for yourself just how professional this weather station unit is.

The model 6163 has a very interesting display console that is used by it, to present the weather data that its remote sensors are continuously gathering. Here are a couple of photos to help you understand better, what is presented and how the information is presented to you as well.

The following types of data are collected and displayed on the console for you, some are available on recall for you.

  • Daily Data . . . . . . . . . . . . . Includes the earliest time of occurrence of highs and lows; period begins/ends at 12:00 am
  • Monthly Data . . . . . . . . . . .the period begins/ends at 12:00 am on the first of the month
  • Yearly Data . . . . . . . . . . the period begins/ends at 12:00 am on the first of January unless otherwise noted
  • Current Display Data . . . . . . . . . Current display data describes the current reading for each weather variable. In most cases, the variable lists the most recently updated reading or calculation.

The console also displays icons, to show what your current weather outside is. These icons are as follows. Weather forecast icons used are the sun, partly cloudy, clouds, rain, or snow. The display will also take you through 8 Moon phases each lunar cycle.

The graphing part of the console is really cool. It will graph out for you all types of different weather data collections. Some examples that Davis provides as a guideline for what you can do are as follows:

  • Current Graph Data . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Current graph data appears in the right-most column in the console graph and represents the latest value within the last period on the graph; totals can be set or reset. Display intervals vary. Examples include: Instant, 15-min., and Hourly
  • Reading; Daily, Monthly, High and Low Graph Time Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . .1 min., 10 min., 15 min., 1 hour, 1 day, 1 month, 1 year (user-selectable, availability depends upon variable selected)
  • Graph Time Span . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24 Intervals + Current Interval (see Graph Intervals to determine time span)
  • Graph Variable Span (Vertical Scale) . . . . . . . . . . . .Automatic (varies depending upon data range); Maximum and Minimum value in range appear in the ticker

Other features that can be viewed on the Davis display console are any of the following highlights. Some may intrigue you, others may not. But they all are possibilities for you and are provided by your Davis Instruments 6163 Wireless Weather Station.

St Barts Island Davis Instruments PWS

They have improved the design for even more accurate data, in especially high winds!

In fact last year during Hurricane Irma, a Davis weather station recorded the wind speed of 199 MPH on the island of St. Barts in the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean.

Many different weather sensors: temperature, humidity, rain, wind with passive radiation shield in a rugged sensor suite — add optional UV and solar radiation sensor

It comes with a highly efficient & quality built anemometer-a 40-foot (12-meter) anemometer cable allows the anemometer to be mounted separately from the rain collector

It also includes a wireless versatile integrated sensor suite, console with backlit LCD screen

Please note the mounting pole/tripod is not included in your purchase.

Instrument Sensors

The ISS Sensor (Integrated Sensor Suite) contains the following instruments. This is a solid selection to gather your local weather readings from.

So the standard version of the ISS contains a rain collector, temperature sensor, humidity sensor, and anemometer.

If you are looking at purchasing the Vantage Pro 2 Plus you will also have access to the following: a pre-installed solar radiation sensor and an ultra-violet (UV) radiation sensor.

Temperature and humidity sensors are mounted in a passive radiation shield to minimize the impact of solar radiation on sensor readings.

Davis Instruments - Davis 4 Conductor Extension Cable 40'Davis Instruments – Davis 4 Conductor Extension Cable 40‘

The provided anemometer measures wind speed and direction and can be installed adjacent to the ISS

Also included in your purchase of the Vantage Pro2 stations include a 40′ (12 m) cable to go between the ISS and the anemometer.

If you have more cable length as a need then it can be extended up to 540′ (165 m) using optional extension cables purchased from Davis Instruments.

The extension cables from Davis weather instruments can be used on the following parts of the Davis Instruments Vantage Pro 2 Integrated Sensor Suite, or the Vantage Pro 2 sensor suite.

Adding cables can add versatility to your wired weather station from Davis Instruments.

The ISS sensor unit is set up separately from the anemometer unit. The anemometer as was stated above needs to be hooked up to my connection to the future.

Consumer Ratings

Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2 Weather Station (Wireless)Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2 Weather Station (Wireless)

The purchasers of the Davis Instruments weather stations are more involved weather persons. They know much more about the weather than the average person. They, in turn, expect a lot more from weather equipment.

As a higher expectation, they also expect to be buying high-quality, highly reliable weather equipment.

The Model 6152 is a steady and sure weather station. It may look outdated, it may require extra outside purchases to accomplish some things you wish to do as well.

But looking at the overall picture, for the services it provides, and the built-in quality, the investment while at first appearances may seem a bit pricey, if you dig deeper, you will find this is getting close to being that professional type of weather equipment you have always wanted.
