La Crosse V-40-Pro Weather Station Unboxed Remote Monitoring Station

The Best Parts of La Crosse V-40-Pro Weather Station Unboxed

So the thrill of getting something new always comes with a rush of adrenaline. Well, it did this time for me. [toc]

La Crosse V-40-Pro Weather Station Unboxed

How exciting when I first cut the tape on my new La Crosse V-40-pro weather station. What makes it so exciting you may ask? Well, a great and fair question.

The reasons for my excitement are the following listed.

  • The first thing I am always excited about is checking out a new product from La Crosse Technologies. Their products are of excellent quality and produce an excellent body of results for you.
  • Secondly, I find their weather stations to be easy to set up and to use.
  • Thirdly, I know if I have any problems the people at La Crosse are great to work with.
  • And at last, I feel a kindred spirit to them in the sense that my wife and I visited their city (La Crosse, Wisconsin) and saw their headquarters in the last weekend of July 2018. You may read about our visit by going to George Loves Weather Visits La Crosse Scientific Technologies-Manufacturer of Weather Instruments

So Let’s Find Out What Is In the Box of the Lacrosse V-40-Pro

When the box is open the first thing that you will see prominently will be the multi-sensors unit, then there is the much smaller Thermo-Hygro sensor.
The multi-sensors unit is very large, the largest piece of this product set. The Thermo-Hygro sensor is much much smaller. They will be set up in different locations on your property.

Next, you will see protected in one corner of the box is the display screen. All of the readings are displayed for you here. Then you will also find two very important paper booklets.

One is the 6-page mini booklet with the explanation of how to set everything up, all instructions included are for setting up your new pro weather station.Inside the box of the V-40-Pro

A Quickstart Guide and a Smaller Sensor

First is the “Professional Remote Monitoring Weather Station Quick Start Guide”. This guide is basically three pages of simple well explained directions to get your V-40-Pro set up quickly and efficiently.

This guide will take you quickly through three basic phases for getting the two sensors operational.

The other Booklet is titled “Add-On Sensors”. The Add-on Sensors booklet is a booklet of other sensors that are available from La Crosse to add to your living quarters to enhance your lifestyle. This obviously is a sales brochure from La Crosse.

Some Observations of the La Crosse V-40-Pro

So I am always interested in the size of the actual real unit. Sometimes in some posts, the exact dimensions are not listed.

The real size is what you are dealing with so here are the dimensions as I measured upon opening the box.

  • The size of the shipped box with everything in it is 11 1/4 inches wide and the box is 14 inches long and it is 6 inches deep.
  • The bottom of the wind vane to the top of the anemometer is 8 inches.
  • The multi-sensor unit is 12 inches long and inches wide.
  • The display unit is measured at 6 inches by 8 inches by 1 inch.
  • The Thermal-Hygro sensor is measured as 2 inches by 6 inches.

My Unboxing Video

Here is my unboxing video. You can see for yourself how attractive the multi-sensor is and the display is a colored display that will be easily seen from different areas of the room it is set up in.

My Summation Of the Unboxing

So this is page one of the two posts that I have devoted to the La Crosse V-40-Pro weather station. My aim is to be as detailed as I would like to see if I were looking for information on this weather station so that I could make the best buying decision for me.

So you may go to La Crosse V40-PRO Weather Station-a Complete Review to read part II of the information I have for you on this new La Crosse weather station.

Using a Weather Station Mounting Pole-Looking at Easy Weather Station Mounting

Here’s Why Weather Station Mounting Pole Is the Best Way to Mount a Personal Weather Station

When you are purchasing your weather station you fast realize that you are in need of a place to set up your weather sensor unit.

Whether your unit is a small remote unit like a La Crosse sensor, an AcuRite sensor, or a much larger professional multifaceted sensor unit like this one from Davis Instruments.

As an example, if you have an AcuRite Weather station like the newest AcuRite 01007M Atlas Weather Station. You then will have a need to buy some pole mounting sections.

This is a newly released product that we recently reviewed. With this unit, an RCA MAST Extension Mounting pole can be used for good AcuRite weather station mounting.

The remote sensor unit for any of the remote suite sensors like for An Acurite (see our review of the AcuRite 02064 Pro Weather Station) or if you own a Davis Instruments (our review is at Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2).

Both of these reviewed units have sensor suites and they need to be attached to a pole which is then fastened to the surface area you have decided works best for getting the best readings you can get.

So as you can see you will need to be set them onto a pole attachment to secure the sensor to ready it for use.

Use a Mounting Pole-Every Product Will Need One

All of the remote sensor units from AcuRite, Davis Instruments, Ambient, and Oregon Scientific use a pole to attach to them.

They all have the pole attachment ring which easily slips over a pole mast. This is much easier to use than to try some other way to hook your station in place on either your roof, your chimney, or your fence.

Remember as I have written these quite extensively in the post What You Should Know About Weather Station Mounting Systems. There are different types of mountings that you may find the most beneficial to your situation.

La Crosse Technologies Sensor
La Crosse Technologies Sensor

They are using a tripod for an open field setting, a chimney strap, and a pole arrangement for mounting on a roof.

Or you may just need to mount your remote sensor unit alongside your house above your roof using a long pole.

Let’s Look at Actual Weather Station Pole Mounting

So as I just mentioned one set up of a sensor involves using a section of a pole attached to your chimney. This is depicted in this photo.

weather station mounting pole systemWhat you see in this photo to the left is a TV antenna on a full mast pole mount and the Davis Vue Weather station mounted from a pole fastened in place by using chimney straps. These chimney straps are easily purchased at Amazon.

⬅⬅⬅They look like this. This is what we used when my brother-in-law set up his weather station above his roof.

He found he has been getting great results for over two years now with this type of mounting. It was very easy to set up for him.

The mast poles were attached to the chimney with two chimney straps. The Davis Vue remote weather sensory unit sits on top of the pole mast unit.

It is now stable and has been stable during high winds, very bad snowstorms, and lots of wind and rain.

It does get very windy where this is located. It is on the outer western edge of the snow belt area east of Lake Erie.

Buffalo, NY, and its famous lake effect snows have been experienced a few times the last two winter seasons.

Your Choices For Weather Station Pole Mounting

  • Chimney mount on a rooftop
  • Top of a fence mounting
  • Freestanding tripod mounting on the ground
  • The cementing of a tripod on a rooftop or on the ground
  • Mounting on a Pitched Roof
  • Mounting on an Eaves

As you can observe you have multiple choices available for you to choose from. The question is that you need to do a thorough inspection of your property to figure out where you will be able to get the very best use of your weather station.

Your Weather Station Mounting Pole Choices

CL4682-4 1/2' Mast Mount Extension for AntennaCL4682-4 1/2′ Mast Mount Extension for AntennaCL4682-4 1/2' Mast Mount Extension for Antenna

I have found three-pole sources that should more than take care of your needs for correctly setting up your personal weather station. Two of the three products I am suggesting are cut into 5-foot sections.

The third choice is an 18-inch long pole which could be used for a rooftop situation or could be attached

With the RCA outdoor antenna mast, you will find the following features that you should be aware of.

First, the sections are sold in 4.5 feet sections. Secondly, there is an RCA provided lifetime warranty provided on the product. The mast is lightweight (it is 12.3 ounces for the 4.5 ft length) and made of heavy-duty steel. It is listed on Amazon as

CL4682-4 1/2′ Mast Mount Extension for Antenna

Solid Signal Heavy Duty Grade 1.25 Inch TV Antenna Mast (SSMAST)Solid Signal Heavy Duty Grade 1.25 Inch TV Antenna Mast (SSMAST)Check PriceThe second suggestion would be this heavy pole mast listed on Amazon as

Solid Signal Heavy Duty Grade 1.25 Inch TV Antenna Mast

These pole mount sections come in 5 foot long sections. They are made of galvanized steel and fit into each other just fine.

Their edges are what they call swedged ends which makes for connecting pieces much easier.

They are manufactured with 18 gauge galvanized steel, which makes for many years of great use. They will rust very slowly.

They come with an outer diameter of 1.25 inches. This is for standard antennas and will work just fine with the remote sensor suites attachment.

Wilson 901117 Pole Mount for AntennaWilson 901117 Pole Mount for AntennaWilson 901117 Pole Mount for Antenna

The next suggestion is listed on Amazon as

Wilson 901117 Pole Mount for Antenna

The Wilson Pole Mount for antennas is available from Amazon.com. This is a well-built 10-inch long pole mount piece. It is 1.5 inches in diameter as well as 10 inches long as I mentioned.

It will work well for a wall mount. The wall could be the top of a section of your house, or it could be fastened to the top of a wooden fence. Or maybe the top of a wall of a shed.

Or you could mount it on the top of a wooden post that has been post-driven into the ground on your property.

It will do the job of being used as a base for inserting other mounting posts into this 10-inch piece. It comes with an included U-bracket assembly and wall mount bracket.

It is manufactured by WeBoost a Wilson Electronics Brand located at
3301 E. Deseret Drive
St. George, Utah 84790

3 Feet Tripod Mount With 2-Inch Outside Diameter Mast3 Feet Tripod Mount With 2-Inch Outside Diameter Mast3 Feet Tripod Mount With 2-Inch Outside Diameter Mast

As a bonus suggestion, I thought that I would talk about using a Tripod Stand that a pole mast extension may be set in.

This tripod stand may be anchored into the ground, or it can be set into cement to anchor it or I could even be anchored on a flat roof of your home or business as well.

It is listed on Amazon as 3 Feet Tripod Mount With 2-Inch Outside Diameter Mast

Here are some features you will receive if you purchase this product.

You will find that it is super sturdy, and is made of 18 gauge steel. It also has a 28 long center universal support pole that you may use. It extends out to this height.

It has sturdiness because the outside diameter is 2.0 inches and the telescoped other end has a dimension of 1 5/8 inches. This makes for a flexible mounting base for a personal weather station.

Whether it would be for an AcuRite mounting pole or a La Crosse mounting pole. It can be used for any collection of weather instruments that you are setting up the solidarity for.

So take a look at this tripod if it matches up with where your mounting needs are on your property.

Kids Interest In Weather-How To Best Introduce Your Child to the Weather

The First Steps Towards Growing Kids Interest In Weather

So your child has expressed an interest in the weatherman on TV. He or she is enamored with being a weatherman.
So how do you go about building your kid’s interest in the weather?

Your child may even like to pretend they are doing the weather on TV.

Maybe your child just has enjoyable activities that include being outside in the weather. Or maybe

your kid has shown any interest in rain, snow, wind, etc. Then maybe they are a young aspiring meteorologist. How can you best bring that out in your middle school child?

If your child is indeed keen on weather activities then you need to get them around things that have to do with following the weather daily.

As an example, you could start keeping a diary for your child or should I say with your child. Get them doing activities with you.

Building your kid’s interest in the weather should involve your effort as well.

So your active interest in doing something they enjoy being involved in is of the utmost importance to them succeeding in building their goals into accomplishments.

Examples Of Building Kids Interest In Weather Using Activities

Here are some great activities to get you out and about and to give your child or children some reason to be involved in weather and weather activities.

  • Go for a hike in the great outdoors. Involve walking in a very different area from what they have ever been exposed to. This will probably make them a bit uncomfortable as they are beyond their normal expectations. They will learn more as their senses are heightened
  • Set up a Wind Sock to demonstrate the wind direction at any given time and place. This is an easy yet very effective and fun activity for learning.
  • You can set up a simple rain gauge at a location out in the open at your home. This will give you precipitation amounts over 8,12, or 24 hour periods, whatever you decide are periods of time you wish to break down weather facts into. If you are recording it will be an exercise the child will enjoy and they will fully now realize that history will tell a story.
  • You can have your child help you plan out an outside activity. This activity will involve checking out the weather. Such examples could be planning a family picnic, planning a trip to a state park, or a golf match with a friend. They could also plan out a tennis match as well.
  • They could work for the growing season with you on setting up a garden. They could see how intricate the weather is with timing around things like when to do the weeding. Also when to do the planting, when to do the harvesting. All of these are affected by the weather. Another great example would be to plan out whether to water the garden or is it going to rain and how to protect the garden from a very cold night.

A Weather Tracker Makes Things Easier

Learning Resources Weather TrackerLearning Resources Weather TrackerLearning Resources Weather Tracker

To help them with tracking the weather better and to make it fun as well would be a great thing to increase the learning curve.

If you can hook fun in with the learning experience they will enjoy the tracking and recording activities. They will not fight you on doing this, nor will they question you on it is an important thing to do.

Plus they will be developing a great habit which will pay off in big benefits down the road. They will be growing bigger and better gardens, they will not be getting rained off on things they have planned to do. They will be able to work around and with the weather for their benefit and pleasure. A very useful duo purpose.

To help them with tracking the weather better and to make it fun as well would be a great thing for you to accomplish.

They should look at buying themselves one of these Learning Center Resource Weather Trackers. They are really cool, easy to use, and provide easy to use, easy to do, and very useful tracking ability.

Building kids’ interest in weather is a process. With that in mind maybe you have a person, who you know, who works a lot, and doesn’t have a lot of time to spend setting up many of these activities. They will appreciate products that get simple by teaching weather experiments and projects.

I wanted to take a look at one of these products that will help the ultra-busy person out. One of these products is the very exciting Big Bag Of Science which is full of science ideas and fun weather experiences.

This will keep your child or your children busy for many hours of the learning experience.

I have heard it said that these experiments are very clever and great eye-openers to the students. They are also easy to use and work through.

And as I promised this will save the ultra-busy parent a lot of stress and time in their desire to be exposing their kids to great learning opportunities.

They will use this kit to save their time as well.

Books That Could Capture Your Child’s Imagination About Weather

When you have younger children, the challenge to get them to focus is a real thing. Kids often are here and there and everywhere with their attention.

One way we used to get our kid’s undivided attention was by either reading a book to them or by watching a video with them.

Our challenge was always making sure that they were following a subject or an area that we could use as a learning experience. I always found their minds to be fresh to new things like a sponge.

Make those impressions good ones. Help them to learn things they need to be learning. Here are a couple of books that come highly recommended.

They are written by the Canadian Meteorologist Janice Dean, who currently serves as co-host and weather anchor on Fox and Friends weekday mornings. She has written these children’s books from the perspective of a meteorologist.

In Summation for Ideas to Bring Weather to Kids

It’s important that our children are taught about the weather they live in. If they learn about it they will understand and respect it.

Those who are really interested in how it works and why it works will be on their road to success as weather people if we as parents and grandparents do our job and cultivate an exciting interest in the weather sciences.

Start them young, expose them to their weather. The weather will always be there with them, why not have them understand it. Always remember how important it is to work on kids’ interest in the weather.

George Loves Weather Visits La Crosse Scientific Technologies-Manufacturer of Weather Instruments

Why a Visit to La Crosse Scientific Instruments

A family vacation gave me the opportunity to find La Crosse instruments. In the Summer of 2018, I was going on a road trip vacation with my wife.

Our starting point was western, NY State, and our goal was Colorado Springs, Colorado. We were going to drive for 7 days total on the trip.

Back in March, when we started planning out this trip the main question was where to visit in the Mid-Western section of the United States.

After a lengthy conversation and using plans from a year ago, we decided on going to the Field of Dreams Movie set from the famous movie in Dyersville, Iowa.

From there I had a desire to try to find the home office for La Crosse Scientific Instruments a popular weather station manufacturer.

It would be around a 105-mile drive to La Crosse, Wisconsin from Dyersville, Iowa. So we made the trip to La Crosse on a hot Sunday, July afternoon.

But Why La Crosse

When I started George Loves Weather in 2016, my love for following the weather was a force behind my site. My love and curiosity about La Crosse Technologies were what lead us to find La Crosse, Wisconsin.

I have done reviews of the La Crosse weather stations here in my blog.

You may read a couple of them here.

La Crosse 327-1414W Color Weather Station

I have personally found their weather stations to consistently produce and to be reliable weather reading gatherers. Here are a couple of pictures taken on that Sunday afternoon in La Crosse.

The first is of downtown LaCrosse, then there is me standing in front of their headquarters, and then a candid photo was taken as we were driving along the Mississippi River heading north towards La Crosse from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin

La Crosse Wisconsin Collage for George Loves Weather

The Biggest Flaw Was that They Were Closed on Sunday

Our trip was a long trip and everything doesn’t always work out as planned. You know it’s called Murphy’s Law. So our arrival on a Sunday evening was disappointing to me. I really would have liked to meet the good people at La Crosse Technologies, but alas that didn’t happen.

So why go? Well, they were too close to being on our way to Rapid City, South Dakota, to simply say that we just couldn’t get there, so I decided we would go anyway. It was my goal to find it and now I can say that I have been there.

In fact, on our next road trip, we will be heading north from Chicago, Illinois area to southeast Wisconsin to find out where the AcuRite weather stations are manufactured and headquartered.

They are part of a company called Chaney Instrument Co. Chaney is a family-owned business headquartered in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

I have written numerous reviews on AcuRIte weather stations as well. You may read a couple of these here.

Our Arrival In La Crosse and How It Went

A Sunday arrival it was. La Crosse the city was easy to find, we just had to drive along the mighty Mississippi River for over 50 miles before we drove into the city. La Crosse Technologies Scientific Instruments
It was around 5:00 pm so we needed to try to find the campus of the La Crosse Technologies home office.
After some research on our phones and then talking to a few people inside a large grocery store (Festival Foods) we thought we had a beat on where it was located.

We found that we needed to go a bit east from where we were and then south out towards the bluffs as they call it in La Crosse.

La Crosse’s Home Office Was Very Unassuming

So we finally found the address 2809 Losey Blvd S, La Crosse, WI 54601. It appeared at first glance to be a retail shop for clocks, in fact, they featured all types of clocks, as well as weather stations and weather station monitoring equipment.

But as we got out and walked along with the building we realized that the left side of the building was what we were looking for. It was definitely the home office and labs for La Crosse Technologies. It was cool to have found it.

The right side was the retail side and the left side was the office part of the company.

La Crosse Wisconsin aerial photo

My wife and I walked around the front of the building.

I could see inside the windows, and I saw some weather stations that were probably being tested in the labs plus the welcome area to the corporate side could be seen inside the front door as well.

It Was Disappointing Not To Introduce Ourselves

My original goal was to meet the company people and get to talk to them about their wonderful weather stations.

But we were impressed with the company offices that we could see, and it is always nice to match reality with what you see online.

Here are some pictures from our stop at La Crosse Technologies on that Sunday evening in July 2018.

How Can Your School Obtain a Weather Station

Your School Can Be Involved In Using A Weather Station

There are a number of programs out there designed to help teachers get their hands on a weather station for schools. Two very interesting programs are the WeatherBug Schools program and the Raspberry Pi for Schools Program.
Both of these programs are designed to encourage schools to participate in their programs. Lesson plans and actual live data collection are provided by WeatherBug in their lessons.

It is very interactive for the students. Here is what the Bug says about their program, “Up-to-the-second data from the WeatherBug Schools Network, the world’s largest weather network, is automatically integrated into the lessons, helping your students grasp even the most complex concepts across a range of subjects”.

Some Great Details About The Raspberry Pi Program

How Can Your School Obtain a Weather Station

How Can Your School Obtain a Weather Station

The Raspberry Pi program is initially offering 1000 climate station kits to schools to be part of their initial rollout of the use of Raspberry Pi along with the program cloud-hosted Oracle Application Express database.

This was done back in 2016. As far as I can tell there isn’t any information available to tell us how this program fits in with the chosen 1000 schools by the Raspberry Pi Oracle Weather Station program.
For details on how you can build your own Raspberry Pi weather station, you may go to the Raspberry Pi Foundation Weather Station Guide by clicking here.

Once you have done this you will notice quite a bit of engagement from the Raspberry Pi Foundation. They also give you much support with their support desk.

The amount of knowledge that a teacher can impart to a child with this equipment can make a big impact to say the very least.

Educating Kids About Weather Is Fun When Using WeatherBug

Using weather stations for educating kids is a great idea. Many science teachings find all of the science involved in teaching a younger child is exactly what makes science learning fun for students.

It is the practical application in a weather station that high light the experience for the teacher and the student. The kids will always remember some of the applications like the wind speed and the anemometers, and also the rain gauge, and the wind vane are always well received in these classes.

WeatherBug is very open to working with schools and school science teachers as well. Their program may be found at the WeatherBug For Schools. It has been extremely popular among schools across the USA and schools have sprung up everywhere using WeatherBug weather equipment.WeatherBug Set up in Your School

The WeatherBug station is used to constantly monitor and record 27 weather readings all the time.

The school gets to be on the WeatherBug television network with their current weather camera shots and weather readings.

Here are two photos from their web projects that will give you all of the current synopsis of hows the program is encapsulated for a school.

Weather Bug Set up For Schools Part 2Weather Bug Set up For Schools Part 2

So as you can read it discusses how the program is set up on the school’s rooftop and then how the students are interactive with the weather station’s upkeep and always transmitting weather data.

Weather data is constantly updating and being transmitted to the WeatherBug network of users.

Using the WeatherBug software is an amazing feat as all of the school’s weather data is always being stored for future tracking and reporting.

Our Summation Of these Two School Programs

So in just reading about these opportunities for our future generations is exciting. Both the Oracle Corporation and WeatherBug Incorporated are open to working with your kids and the schools that they attend.

These hands-on involvements are great for the experiences the children will receive. A totally worthwhile thing to pursue the children’s education. They will learn first-hand things about the weather that they can use daily for the rest of their lives.

In checking online there are hundreds of schools that successfully contribute every day to the weather community in the world.
