Kids Interest In Weather-How To Best Introduce Your Child to the Weather

The First Steps Towards Growing Kids Interest In Weather

So your child has expressed an interest in the weatherman on TV. He or she is enamored with being a weatherman.
So how do you go about building your kid’s interest in the weather?

Your child may even like to pretend they are doing the weather on TV.

Maybe your child just has enjoyable activities that include being outside in the weather. Or maybe

your kid has shown any interest in rain, snow, wind, etc. Then maybe they are a young aspiring meteorologist. How can you best bring that out in your middle school child?

If your child is indeed keen on weather activities then you need to get them around things that have to do with following the weather daily.

As an example, you could start keeping a diary for your child or should I say with your child. Get them doing activities with you.

Building your kid’s interest in the weather should involve your effort as well.

So your active interest in doing something they enjoy being involved in is of the utmost importance to them succeeding in building their goals into accomplishments.

Examples Of Building Kids Interest In Weather Using Activities

Here are some great activities to get you out and about and to give your child or children some reason to be involved in weather and weather activities.

  • Go for a hike in the great outdoors. Involve walking in a very different area from what they have ever been exposed to. This will probably make them a bit uncomfortable as they are beyond their normal expectations. They will learn more as their senses are heightened
  • Set up a Wind Sock to demonstrate the wind direction at any given time and place. This is an easy yet very effective and fun activity for learning.
  • You can set up a simple rain gauge at a location out in the open at your home. This will give you precipitation amounts over 8,12, or 24 hour periods, whatever you decide are periods of time you wish to break down weather facts into. If you are recording it will be an exercise the child will enjoy and they will fully now realize that history will tell a story.
  • You can have your child help you plan out an outside activity. This activity will involve checking out the weather. Such examples could be planning a family picnic, planning a trip to a state park, or a golf match with a friend. They could also plan out a tennis match as well.
  • They could work for the growing season with you on setting up a garden. They could see how intricate the weather is with timing around things like when to do the weeding. Also when to do the planting, when to do the harvesting. All of these are affected by the weather. Another great example would be to plan out whether to water the garden or is it going to rain and how to protect the garden from a very cold night.

A Weather Tracker Makes Things Easier

Learning Resources Weather TrackerLearning Resources Weather TrackerLearning Resources Weather Tracker

To help them with tracking the weather better and to make it fun as well would be a great thing to increase the learning curve.

If you can hook fun in with the learning experience they will enjoy the tracking and recording activities. They will not fight you on doing this, nor will they question you on it is an important thing to do.

Plus they will be developing a great habit which will pay off in big benefits down the road. They will be growing bigger and better gardens, they will not be getting rained off on things they have planned to do. They will be able to work around and with the weather for their benefit and pleasure. A very useful duo purpose.

To help them with tracking the weather better and to make it fun as well would be a great thing for you to accomplish.

They should look at buying themselves one of these Learning Center Resource Weather Trackers. They are really cool, easy to use, and provide easy to use, easy to do, and very useful tracking ability.

Books That Could Capture Your Child’s Imagination About Weather

When you have younger children, the challenge to get them to focus is a real thing. Kids often are here and there and everywhere with their attention.

One way we used to get our kid’s undivided attention was by either reading a book to them or by watching a video with them.

Our challenge was always making sure that they were following a subject or an area that we could use as a learning experience. I always found their minds to be fresh to new things like a sponge.

Make those impressions good ones. Help them to learn things they need to be learning. Here are a couple of books that come highly recommended.

They are written by the Canadian Meteorologist Janice Dean, who currently serves as co-host and weather anchor on Fox and Friends weekday mornings. She has written these children’s books from the perspective of a meteorologist.

Deciding on Weather Stations For Kids

If you have a child who’s curious about science, and particularly the weather, then taking a closer look at weather stations for kids can be a great thing to do.

You can satisfy the urge to learn and the child who wants to learn can become a great student of the weather.

It just takes your encouragement, and guidance to turn that learning hunger into a directed study of the weather that can provide a lifetime of enjoyment and thrills.

Since the weather is always changing the student shouldn’t ever get bored. Follow us as we walk you through setting up your weather station for your kid.

What This Guide Weather Stations For Kids Is About

In this guide, we’re going to highlight some of the unique and fun methods you can use to help your child make their very own weather station. We will also take a closer look at some of the different products you can purchase as well.

Keeping this in mind, let’s take a closer look at the subject in greater detail.

Developing Your Very Own Weather Station

Firstly, it’s safe to say that developing weather stations for your kid can be an excellent project that’ll definitely help to nurture a budding interest in science.

Using true science as a basis for learning about the weather let us walk through some weather instruments that are basic and will be needed.

Use these Instruments as a basic weather station

  • Thermometer
  • Rain Gauge
  • Weathervane
  • Windsock
  • Hygrometer
  • Barometer

Start With the Basics in Assembling Your Weather Stations for Kids

In looking at these basic instruments that you can use, remember that the basics for any weather forecasting start with the temperature outside right now? Or is the wind blowing right now? You also think about: is it windy or not? and then you cover the bases with is it currently sunny, cloudy, rainy, or snowy?

So keeping those questions in mind you then would need these instruments to answer any of these questions with your child.

Thermometer

A basic station can begin with a simple thermometer to test the temperature at any given point in the day. So in looking at a thermometer, you will need the following qualities.

It should be an outdoor thermometer. It should be fastened down enough to prevent it from being compromised by any weather condition. Conditions such as extreme exposure to sunlight.

This could disturb the effectiveness of your thermometer performing its duties. Usually, it will cause the readings of the thermometer to be much more ineffective than if it is located in a shaded area.

Once you have found one with large numbers for easy reading and recording then you can look at purchasing your first tool for your weather station.
ElectroOptix KT-7 KleerTemp ThermometerElectroOptix KT-7 KleerTemp Thermometer

This thermometer is a great choice for your younger child. It works well because the numbers are bold and clearly found and read.

This is easily installed on your window, the outside of the window, and its accuracy is rated highly by those who own it.

So this matches up well with a good choice in starting your weather station for kids.

It is also inexpensive in cost for your start-up weather readings.

You can easily put together a more comprehensive weather station that’ll give your child plenty of information to monitor throughout the day.

Next up let’s look at rain gauges.

Rain Gauge

Next on our list is one of the best things to look for when you’re building or purchasing instruments for your child’s weather station.  This will be a rain gauge.

This will be an essential aspect of monitoring the climate, as we discussed because precipitation is a large part of living daily on planet earth.

Just as you’d expect, a simple rain gauge will allow your child to keep track of how much rain has fallen within any given period. You can certainly buy rain gauges as they are recommended and therefore needed for the instruction of your weather in your area.

Rain gauges are easily purchased for a reasonable amount of money. My favorite recommendation for your kid’s weather education is this rain gauge.

AcuRite 00850A2 5-Inch Capacity Easy-Read Magnifying Rain GaugeAcuRite 00850A2 5-Inch Capacity Easy-Read Magnifying Rain Gauge

This AcuRite 5-Inch Capacity Rain Gauge is my choice for easy to buy, easy to install and it has all the ingredients you would want in setting up your educational lab.

It is easily read and recorded. It installs with minimal effort, and then best of all it is very child friendly in the sense of it is easy to read.

It will last the length of your child needing it, and it is operated with a correct understanding (It is easily understood).

The student will comfortably use their science reports.

As I mentioned earlier the price is right as well. Buy with ease now from Amazon.

You also could use a basic setup that involves using a simple jar to collect the rainfall, and then measuring it with a ruler to judge how much has fallen during any given period.

This is a great suggestion for a do-it-yourself person. It will require time and gathering up some supplies.

Weathervane

Another great item to add to your weather station will be a simple weathervane that lets you know which way the wind is blowing. So wind direction is something important in forecasting.

Montague Metal Products 24-Inch Weathervane with Rooster OrnamentMontague Metal Products 24-Inch Weathervane with Rooster Ornament

Wind direction matters much in basic weather knowledge. Your child will be learning another basic foundation instrument used in weather forecasting.

A big plus here is that wind direction and all the reasons for it are some of the easier understood science theories to the young mind.

This could be a real fun time as well. The weathervanes are very unique and very interesting when picking one out for yourself.

You can purchase these in a variety of designs, many of which can be colorful and fun to keep your child engaged, but you can equally design your own with some basic DIY work.

Of course, a quality weathervane lets your child know which direction the wind is blowing, and this will be a key step in their growing knowledge of the natural environment.

Windsock

When it comes to monitoring the wind, another excellent item to invest in will be a windsock. A windsock will give you another visual indication of the direction that the wind is blowing, as well as the overall speed, which will be apparent in observing how full it is.

Just as you’d expect, watching the windsock can be lots of fun for any child, especially when there is a variety of different wind patterns occurring.

When picking one out, it can be exciting as there are many designs and colors. You will find the windsock is a very visual part of learning about weather.

The windsock mounting is a thing that should be thought about thoroughly before you purchase. You need to decide where is my best location for capturing the wind best with fewer obstructions.

So watching a windsock as it revolves from one side to the next as the wind changes direction, to a strong wind really whipping and filling out the windsock, spell cool, and hard to forget the experience for your young weather student.

A quickly remembered and seldom forgotten instrument for your child’s station.

Equally, if you are a Do It Yourself person, you can make your own windsock very easily by using the sleeve of an old shirt, or you could even purchase a specially designed one.

Anemometer

If you truly want to keep track of the wind, which is always a key aspect of weather stations for kids, then you’ll want to get hold of an anemometer.

For the older or more advanced child having an anemometer will provide a great learning experience. This is one of the more sophisticated weather tools, so it will be great to expose your child to an anemometer.

For more information and details on anemometers you want to read our published post, What Does an Anemometer Look Like.

HOLDPEAK 866B Digital Anemometer Handheld Wind Speed MeterHOLDPEAK 866B Digital Anemometer Handheld Wind Speed Meter

An anemometer more accurately measures the wind speed for you. Reading one of these is the experience an older child could use.

In days past if you used a cup anemometer you would probably need a slide rule and a highly learned math level to calculate the wind speed.

But in today’s world, anemometers are digital and they are readily available at a great bargain price be purchased. They are also very easy to use.

You can usually purchase these online superstores like Walmart or Amazon. It will be a great way to verify your child’s data that they’ve gathered through the more basic techniques.

Compass

This can be added to your child’s pack of instruments, which is a basic tool that can be used to verify true north for the gathering of top weather information.

You then will know the exact direction the wind is blowing from. This will help in forecasting the direction, and speed of weather fronts that are blowing (moving) in.

In order to get the full information your child needs about the wind patterns, a compass will be an essential purchase that will always be a key component of any weather station.

Reading a Compass-a Skill

Teaching your child how to read the compass is also a useful skill for them to have in general, and it’s also useful to keep the compass with them on any camping trips as well because they will learn a great deal more about the natural world by doing so.

Hygrometer

An interesting item to consider buying in order to complete your weather stations for kids will be a hygrometer, which is designed to measure the relative humidity within the air.

These tools are always fun for your kid to play with, and they’re also highly educational to boot.

Fortunately, these items do not have to be too expensive either, and you’ll often be able to pick one up for just a few dollars.

Alternatively, if you are purchasing comprehensive weather stations for kids, then you will likely find these meters come as standard.

Barometer

Of course, no weather stations for kids would be complete without a barometer, which is essential for measuring air pressure.

If your child develops a great interest in the science of predicting the weather, then they will be able to learn a great deal by comparing all of their collected information.

With all of the collected information combined with the air pressure, they may be able to interestingly predict a range of precipitation over the coming days. They can do an actual weather forecast for their area.Ambient Weather B1025C Antique Storm Glass Wall Mount Liquid Barometer with Drip CupAmbient Weather B1025C Antique Storm Glass Wall Mount Liquid Barometer with Drip Cup

In looking at a barometer to recommend for a child student, I came across this very eye-catching barometer.

It is currently a popular selection from many happy Amazon customers.

This model from Ambient includes three different instruments. It includes a Liquid Barometer a Galileo Thermometer and also a Dial Barometer.

It uses colored liquid to highlight the change in liquid levels in tune with the barometric pressure going up or down at the present time period.

This will help with understanding the upcoming weather changes.

Use a Journal To Record Your Results

Finally, it’s a great idea to invest in a quality journal that your child can use to note down all of the information they gather.

Just as you’d expect, this is a fantastic way to teach your child the basics of science, and it will also give them a special place to write down all of the information they have collected.

This will give them some degree of prestige and importance that’ll greatly help to keep them engaged over the long run.

At the end of the day, it’s clear to see that monitoring the weather can be a fun and engaging way to nurture your child’s interest in science.

It also doesn’t have to be very expensive to gather all of the basic equipment that they’ll need to get started.

You may decide to build your child a kit of weather instruments as I have laid out for you or you may make a choice of looking into and researching a weather station kit for kids.

In most cases, these kits are perfectly suited for any child over the age of eight, and they will come with everything they need including thermometers, rain gauges, wind vanes, compasses, and a whole lot more.

The Weather Outside Is Always the Right Time To Learn

No matter what time of year it is, building a weather station for kids is a great way to bond with your child, educate them, and keep them entertained all at the same.

This is an easy way to foster an interest in science at an early age, thereby laying the foundation of knowledge which can be built upon for years to come.

Here are some how-to tips on getting one ready to use with your young one. Here is a list of items that every kid’s weather station needs.

Rain Gauge

Probably one of the most crucial items for putting together any children’s weather station is the rain gauge. While these can be purchased from many a retail outlet, they can also be made very simply.

The easiest way to make a rain gauge is to simply put an empty jar outside and let it collect the rainwater or even snow. You can measure out with a colored marker, how much a tenth of an inch is and mark it out all the way to 3 inches.

Your kid can then see simply how much rain it takes to let’s say collect a half-inch of rain. From this, the child can measure exactly how much precipitation has collected over a set amount of time.

You could have the child or children then log in a notebook the extended period of time and how much it rained.

Barometer

A barometer is a tool that measures air pressure. This is one way in which meteorologists can predict the weather.

By letting the child try and predict the weather from information gleaned from a barometer, parents are actually cultivating weather education for kids.

Barometers come in two different kinds, mercury, and aneroid. You probably don’t want to attempt to build one by hand but here is a simple highly rated and popular barometer that you may look at and purchase from Walmart or Amazon, your choice.

Hygrometer

Hygrometers are devices that are used by meteorologists to measure the atmosphere’s relative humidity. This is also a very important tool when being used for weather forecasting for kids.

A hygrometer, additionally called a psychrometer, is a gadget that is made use of to determine the humidity airborne. A typical method these devices job is using a product that attracts wetness, which changes depending on how damp it is.

The possibly most basic approach of these is to utilize human hair. The hair will certainly change length, relying on the moisture. Hence, it determines the relative humidity level of moisture of a specific location.

Each is utilized on a chart to discover the relative moisture content of that temperature level as well as the area.

A small distinction between the temperature level of the bulbs reveals a high amount of moisture coming from a reduced dissipation price.

ThermoPro TP50 Hygrometer Indoor Humidity MonitorThermoPro TP50 Hygrometer Indoor Humidity MonitorIn completely dry air, dissipation occurs quicker showing a big difference in temperature level thus offering you a low relative humidity.

A hygrometer can be looked at and purchased here if you are interested, for under $10.

This is a very essential part of putting together a kid’s weather station for learning.

Weather Vane

Many parents automatically think of one of the old-fashioned weather vanes shaped like a rooster when they think of a weather station for kids. They are not off the mark at all when thinking this way as the humble vane is perhaps the most iconic part of a proper weather station.

Children can easily record which way the wind is blowing by paying attention to what direction the vane turns to. It can also help with them learning their raw navigation direction (north, south, east, west.)

Rooster Weathervane
Rooster Weathervane “

If a weather vane is not available or cannot be attached anywhere (such as an apartment building), a windsock may be substituted.

They perform the same function as a weather vane and can easily be made from an old shirt sleeve or pant leg.

Anemometer

Unlike a weather vane or windsock, which is used to determine which way the wind is blowing, an anemometer is used to determine the speed at which the wind is blowing.

Just like a hygrometer, an anemometer these are an important part of putting together this learning kit for your child. For more information on anemometers, you may want to read our article about anemometers.

These can also be sought out at hobby shops or science shops. Some hardware stores may also keep them in stock.

Using a Weather Journal Helps the Learning Process

A journal is an easy way for children of all ages to keep track of their weather information for kids.

Younger children may want to just draw a picture of what the weather was like that day and perhaps make a single-letter notation of which direction the wind blew.

Older children may want to keep more detailed notes, such as the date, the weather, humidity level, and perhaps even male predictions on future weather based on the information they gathered that day.

Weather Station For Kids Can Be Fun

By purchasing or making the aforementioned tools, a family can have quite a bit of fun and even learn many interesting things by making their own weather station for kids.

In fact, even kids that tend to not want to do “educational” activities will find themselves engrossed for hours when they wander around the outdoors, not only getting fresh air but “flexing” their brain as well.

Be Responsible to Your Kids

Kids are naturally very curious about life as they begin to grow and develop. As responsible adults, we look at our grandkids or our children as little undeveloped sponges.

Their minds are fresh and just waiting to soak up all of the new things around them.

It would be good to teach them about what they live with every day, the weather.

So whether you at home are involved in sharing and teaching about the daily climate changes that will affect their lives that is up to you.

However, you may find that the school your child attends may not adequately teach the lessons of daily weather that will be most important to you and your family.

Please let me share some thoughts concerning weather information for kids and why and maybe some hows on accomplishing this objective.

Technology Helps Make Weather Information for Kids Easier

Technology drives science by making it easier to discover new things while science, in turn, drives technology to invent new tools for the purpose of scientific discovery.

When children of all ages use kids’ weather stations, it gives them the opportunity to learn these things firsthand.

There are pros and cons to both buying and making the tools for the kid’s weather stations. While purchased tools will provide qualitative data that homemade instruments simply cannot, homemade tools provide hands-on experience as to how the tools truly work, from the ground up.

Luckily, kids’ weather stations can actually be made relatively easy by you are your kids or students. But should there be no time for that, a weather station in totality can be purchased either online or at retail outlets.

You may take a look at a student weather station by going to Amazon to see it and what it is all about.

Features of Some of the Best Weather Stations for Kids

The best weather station for kids will feature these standard tools: a thermometer to measure temperature, a rain gauge to measure precipitation, a wind vane to measure wind direction, an anemometer to measure wind speed, a barometer to measure air pressure, and a hygrometer to measure humidity.

All of these tools are vastly important to put together a properly functioning weather station for children. A reference chart for clouds may also want to be purchased to study cloud coverage.

Cloud coverage is determined and recorded as the percentage of the sky being covered by clouds.

To properly house the weather station, try to place it in a louvered shed as this will allow for maximum air circulation. Thermometers should never be placed in direct sunlight as this can artificially alter the true temperature.

While barometers can be kept inside, all of the other tools should be stored outdoors.

By making a weather station for children as a school-time activity, teachers can strengthen and foster their curiosity about not only the weather but the whole world around them.

There is also the added benefit of such structured learning satisfying the recommended curriculum of the National Science Education Standards.

These standards state that schoolchildren from grades kindergarten through the 4th need to learn why and how scientists use tools for observations, investigations, and to take measurements.

Older school-age children need to learn how technology and science go hand in hand.

The Results After Constructing a Weather Station

After the children have assembled and used the weather station, they will have a strong desire to perform weather experiments for kids. These experiments can be relatively simple enough to perform, such as recreating the effects of a tornado.

A great recent example would be they could be taught about how tornadoes act and behave.

The same tornadoes are possible to be a large disruptive part of a major hurricane such as yesterday’s (September 10, 2017) Hurricane Irma landing and moving through the state of Florida.

This would be a great teaching example, as you can take real-live results, from Hurricane Irma, you could map out where tornadoes actually appeared and landed during Hurricane Irma.

Along with that then you could study weather readings by the professional weather people and then you could put these readings up against where the readings were and how long and where the tornadoes appeared and you could see the weather readings did affect the weather by forming the storms that did indeed happen. This is a great example of weather experiments for kids.

The Kids Results Provide Data

The kids can then share the data between themselves, between classes in the same school, and even compare data on how weather differs across the state or even the country.

There are many websites where real-time data can be collected and analyzed in the classroom environment.

After the activities are complete, teachers may want to test the knowledge of their students. This can be done by a variety of methods, including online testing, traditional pen, and paper tests, or by matching pictures, such as matching the names of tools with the correct picture and then writing down what their purpose is.

There is no doubt that kids’ weather stations are a great boon to the scientific knowledge that studying the weather can bring.

Not only are they recommended by professional educators and science organizations and government institutions, but parents the entire world over know the value of keeping their kids interested in the world around them.

Make the right choice for your students by taking the time to invest in their future by building, purchasing, or otherwise using a weather station that the kids can enjoy and learn from for many years to come.

A Great Beginner’s Student Weather Station

Learning Resources Weather CenterLearning Resources Weather Center

In looking for a recommended weather station that will work well for students I came across the Learning Resources Weather Center. This unit is solid and sturdy. It is able to take a licking and keep ticking as they say.

Children will find the station to include the best and most basic of weather tools. Included are instruments to measure barometric pressure, relative humidity, and air temperature.

Another area covered is to introduce kids to meteorology. This is a great way to introduce the study of weather and forecasting to young students.

It is in the shape of a carrying case. the three instruments are well protected and should not easily break from any mishandling. The instruments are deemed to be of good value and accurate rating.

Using Weather Stations for Kids to Learn

No matter what time of year it is, building a weather station for kids is a great way to bond with your child, educate them, and keep them entertained all at the same.

This is an easy way to foster an interest in science at an early age, thereby laying the foundation of knowledge which can be built upon for years to come.

Here are some of the benefits that a parent can expect a child to receive from using a weather station.

Seeding the Interest In Weather Education for Kids

Whether at home or in school, kids love getting in touch with nature. So with that said weather education for kids can be accomplished by having ample opportunity to learn about the weather and weather forecasting for kids.

To most children of elementary school age, weather consists mainly of rain, snow, and the sun. They do not generally dwell on the intricacies that naturally exist in the weather.

By using weather stations children, they learn all about things such as barometric pressure, temperature fluctuations, and things of this nature. Studying these instruments along with children and more allows them to gain a weather education for these kids.

The children can participate in tracking the weather on a daily basis, which is something that almost all children enjoy and also something they look forward to.

Weather Forecasting can be fun for them and weather forecasting for kids can be learned about by watching videos such as this video.

The weather station should be in an outdoor location and should include standard tools such as a thermometer, barometer, hygrometer, and other accessories.

This gives the children the opportunity to handle all tools themselves and learn by trial and error when collecting data.

Share What They Have Learned

Kids love sharing what they know with other kids and with adults. Imagine how excited they will be when they can share their knowledge with their classmates or with their parents.

Teachers can put the kids in small groups and even have contests focusing on weather forecasting for kids.

Nurturing healthy competition between children is a proven method of fostering both a love of the subject and a desire to be precise.

Some experts of school-age children believe that not enough science is taught in school.

A weather station for kids is a cost-effective way to ensure they are filling that need to learn about the world around them.

Furthering Their Knowledge

Teachers can take the benefit of being in the classroom environment to increase weather education for kids after they have used the weather station for kids.

This can be done easily by watching the local newscast and observing what the professionals have reported. For instance, if the kids made weather predictions for a certain day, the local weather broadcast can be watched online as a class.

Correct predictions and incorrect assumptions can be discussed as a class to ascertain why some things came true and others did not.

Write It Down

No matter what age the child is, they should keep a journal of their daily weather-related activities and other weather information for kids. The information they collect in the journal and that they glean from the weather station may be used to conduct scientific experiments.

Such things as recreating a tornado’s vortex can help foster an interest in how exactly nature works and the child’s own personal relationship with the world around them. Such things as their own actions affecting the weather can be discussed if it is deemed age-appropriate.

The best thing about building a weather station for kids is that they are very cost-effective. Weather stations can be purchased pre-made or they can be built from scratch.

By purchasing or making one from scratch, a family or classroom can have quite a bit of fun and even learn many interesting things by making their own weather station for kids.

In fact, even kids that tend to not want to do “educational” activities will find themselves engrossed for hours when they wander around the outdoors, not only getting fresh air but “flexing” their brain as well.
