This national alert system works with authorities from all states down to the county levels of each state. This tying everyone together system alert network is making it your single source for comprehensive weather and emergency information.NOAA Weather Alert Radio
NWR has over a thousand transmitters that cover all fifty states, surrounding coastal waters, and the country’s territories.

Extreme Whiteout Winter Weather Conditions-Driving in a Whiteout

Whiteout Winter Conditions Are Dangerous

As I write this today, it is January 19. The heart of the winter in Western New York. It is also winter in the Northern Hemisphere. We are experiencing firsthand, whiteout winter conditions.

Well if you live in southern states of the United States, or maybe the southwestern area of the United States, you may not even know what a whiteout winter weather is.[toc]

A whiteout is actually an extremely, quite harmful climate condition. Whiteouts take place in the cool, snowy regions of the world, consisting of the northern place of the lower 48 states of the United States as well as in Alaska.

Like I said maybe the areas I mentioned plus the state of Hawaii, may not know of whiteouts.

Conditions Where Whiteout Winter Weather May Exist

Whiteouts may take place in these various kinds of weather conditions. Please read carefully as these could help you out someday.

  • When there is actually a hefty snowstorm or a snowstorm accompanied by very strong winds, the snowfall comes down fast and furious. Sometimes it is snowing so hard that you can not see the road surface in front of you. I have had this literally happen to me many times.
  • A whiteout can occur when you have a condition where the snow is or at least it appears to be blowing directly straight at you. It will look to you like a thousand arrows have been shot directly at you at the same moment. You will have an extremely difficult time looking forward to that point when driving.
  • A TIP To Help You: I have always found great success on these occasions looking at the edge of the road on the outside. Which is to say the right-hand edge of the highway.
  • You end up slowing down very, very much in order to continue on your way to your destination. Otherwise, you would probably hit something, or go off the road. It can be an extremely tough driving situation.

Extreme Whiteout Winter Weather

  • There are times, that you can with virtual certainty, cannot find your hand in front of your face.
  • Whiteouts may additionally develop when there is actually no snow falling from the sky. The cloud cover can diffuse the illumination of the sunshine. Within this circumstance, a person can’t decipher or situate the area of the snowy property as well as distinguish the ground from the cloud cover. In other words, you will not be able to tell where the snow starts and where the snow ends literally. You are totally fooled by what you are not seeing in your mind’s eye.

3 Quick Tips For Driving In a Winter Whiteout

Here are 3 quick tips for handling the whiteout better, if you are out driving in one. Please remember these come up very suddenly and are not very pleasant to drive into.

Always be prepared. You should seriously consider these 3 tips when you are dealing with the winter weather.
Tip #1
Never ever be caught in a whiteout. You can try to plan out your life so you don’t need to even be out in the whiteout. Observe your weather.

Don’t ever take whiteout conditions too lightly, they are very serious

Be aware of your weather conditions daily. know what you are dealing with today. You could look into buying yourself a more inexpensive, good weather station that you may observe before you do anything. You may check out these two recommended readings from earlier posts I have written.

You can read La Crosse Technology 308-1412S Color LCD Wireless Weather Station Review and Using Weather Alerts for more information. Another good one would, if I may suggest Checking Your Local Weather-Some Suggestions From Us.

Tip #2
LED Pods Power Plus 2Pcs 7'' 144W LED Light BarLED Pods Power Plus 2Pcs 7” 144W LED Light BarLED Pods Power Plus 2Pcs 7'' 144W LED Light BarYou can look into having some fog lights installed on your vehicle. This isn’t essential but it most likely would help you out much with your visibility seeing in the shooting arrows of snowing and/or snow blowing as well.

This is a very good-looking and highly rated set of power LED fog lights, they are rated highly by satisfied customers.

These lights help prevent visual fatigue which will happen very quickly when driving in these conditions.

They deliver over 14,000 lumens and 144 watts of light to your visibility. it’s time to at least take a serious look.

Now this tip isn’t for everyone, but I am sure drivers in Colorado, New York, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Wyoming, Montana, and need I go on where you do experience whiteout very often during the winter season, this should be thought about and considered.

There are things not to hit, in certain states. You know things like Elk, Moose, and Deer, to name a few. So you will need to be able to see all obstacles.

Tip #3
LED Road Flares Emergency Lights - Roadside Warning Car Safety Flare KitLED Road Flares Emergency Lights – Roadside Warning Car Safety Flare KitLED Road Flares Emergency Lights - Roadside Warning Car Safety Flare Kit

So if you do have an accident, or you decide you can’t keep attempting to drive, you will need to STAND OUT or be seen in the whiteout conditions.

Your answer is to have a set of road flares with you, that can be seen. These flares will cut through the whiteout and help other drivers to see you and your vehicle pulled off the road.

Very important that you are seen and not hit. If you need to pull off the road, from visual fatigue, or your nerves are shot, then you need to consider a few things.

So you can consider how much your safety is worth to you? How much is your family’s safety worth to you?

  • These flares are extra special in the value they bring to you. They are super bright, crushproof, and rainproof (snowproof) as well.
  • A few extra bells and whistles would, 9 different flashing modes, 15 super-bright LEDs. 12 Amber and 3 white.
  • CRUSHPROOF & MAGNETIC: super-strong rare earth magnets will keep them secured to the side of your truck or RV
  • Also, they have a special tool (a key chain screwdriver) included to help you with changing the batteries quickly and EASY.
  • It comes with pre-installed “AAA” batteries. PLUS they are also included with a special bonus tool-a combo glass breaker and a seat belt cutter in case these are needed at the time of an accident.

You can rest with peace of mind, knowing you and your family are protected sitting on the side of a highway.

Take winter weather conditions seriously. Use your weather knowledge and your weather information provided to you by your weather station as a tool to help you figure out how to best live your life, and make the best winter weather decisions.

Some Miscellaneous Truths About Whiteout Weather

There are instances wherein the more northern polar locations it can be that massive mountain ranges that are actually covered with powder snow could be concealed under white cloud cover.

In these situations, an individual can’t distinguish the perspective from the slants of a mountain range in the entire snowy landscape. The only method to make the ground visible is to put a dark item on it.

During a whiteout, vehicle drivers cannot identify the road surface area against the snow-covered fields along the public highway. Thus it is quite typical that auto collisions are frequently happening during whiteouts.

Airplanes have actually crashed into the sides of hills during whiteouts. So you can see air travelers and motorists alike can find these conditions hazardous to their health.

Whiteouts threaten alpinists, skiers, and snowboarders as well. So these people show give respect to the possibility that whiteout may occur at any time.

George Loves Weather Visits La Crosse Scientific Technologies-Manufacturer of Weather Instruments

Why a Visit to La Crosse Scientific Instruments

A family vacation gave me the opportunity to find La Crosse instruments. In the Summer of 2018, I was going on a road trip vacation with my wife.

Our starting point was western, NY State, and our goal was Colorado Springs, Colorado. We were going to drive for 7 days total on the trip.

Back in March, when we started planning out this trip the main question was where to visit in the Mid-Western section of the United States.

After a lengthy conversation and using plans from a year ago, we decided on going to the Field of Dreams Movie set from the famous movie in Dyersville, Iowa.

From there I had a desire to try to find the home office for La Crosse Scientific Instruments a popular weather station manufacturer.

It would be around a 105-mile drive to La Crosse, Wisconsin from Dyersville, Iowa. So we made the trip to La Crosse on a hot Sunday, July afternoon.

But Why La Crosse

When I started George Loves Weather in 2016, my love for following the weather was a force behind my site. My love and curiosity about La Crosse Technologies were what lead us to find La Crosse, Wisconsin.

I have done reviews of the La Crosse weather stations here in my blog.

You may read a couple of them here.

La Crosse 327-1414W Color Weather Station

I have personally found their weather stations to consistently produce and to be reliable weather reading gatherers. Here are a couple of pictures taken on that Sunday afternoon in La Crosse.

The first is of downtown LaCrosse, then there is me standing in front of their headquarters, and then a candid photo was taken as we were driving along the Mississippi River heading north towards La Crosse from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin

La Crosse Wisconsin Collage for George Loves Weather

The Biggest Flaw Was that They Were Closed on Sunday

Our trip was a long trip and everything doesn’t always work out as planned. You know it’s called Murphy’s Law. So our arrival on a Sunday evening was disappointing to me. I really would have liked to meet the good people at La Crosse Technologies, but alas that didn’t happen.

So why go? Well, they were too close to being on our way to Rapid City, South Dakota, to simply say that we just couldn’t get there, so I decided we would go anyway. It was my goal to find it and now I can say that I have been there.

In fact, on our next road trip, we will be heading north from Chicago, Illinois area to southeast Wisconsin to find out where the AcuRite weather stations are manufactured and headquartered.

They are part of a company called Chaney Instrument Co. Chaney is a family-owned business headquartered in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

I have written numerous reviews on AcuRIte weather stations as well. You may read a couple of these here.

Our Arrival In La Crosse and How It Went

A Sunday arrival it was. La Crosse the city was easy to find, we just had to drive along the mighty Mississippi River for over 50 miles before we drove into the city. La Crosse Technologies Scientific Instruments
It was around 5:00 pm so we needed to try to find the campus of the La Crosse Technologies home office.
After some research on our phones and then talking to a few people inside a large grocery store (Festival Foods) we thought we had a beat on where it was located.

We found that we needed to go a bit east from where we were and then south out towards the bluffs as they call it in La Crosse.

La Crosse’s Home Office Was Very Unassuming

So we finally found the address 2809 Losey Blvd S, La Crosse, WI 54601. It appeared at first glance to be a retail shop for clocks, in fact, they featured all types of clocks, as well as weather stations and weather station monitoring equipment.

But as we got out and walked along with the building we realized that the left side of the building was what we were looking for. It was definitely the home office and labs for La Crosse Technologies. It was cool to have found it.

The right side was the retail side and the left side was the office part of the company.

La Crosse Wisconsin aerial photo
La Crosse Wisconsin Aerial Photo

My wife and I walked around the front of the building.

I could see inside the windows, and I saw some weather stations that were probably being tested in the labs plus the welcome area to the corporate side could be seen inside the front door as well.

It Was Disappointing Not To Introduce Ourselves

My original goal was to meet the company people and get to talk to them about their wonderful weather stations.

But we were impressed with the company offices that we could see, and it is always nice to match reality with what you see online.

Here are some pictures from our stop at La Crosse Technologies on that Sunday evening in July 2018.

Tornado Alley Season Starts-So What About It?

Tornado Alley Season Starts Soon

The tornado alley season is fast approaching. If you know about this, this is a time to get prepared for the tornado season.

But if you don’t know what tornado alley is you really will not even know the tornado season will be starting in a couple of weeks.

The phrase “tornado alley,” while not an official term used to describe weather events, has been featured heavily in popular media in recent years.

Readers who don’t hail from those states affected by these often devastating weather events may, however, be asking themselves, what is tornado alley?

This article attempts to offer a comprehensive response to this frequently asked question.

What are Tornadoes?

Tornadoes are some of the most devastating and awe-inspiring natural events that regularly occur in the continental United States. Tornadoes also referred to for some reason as twisters, are rotating columns of air that develop between the surface of the Earth and low-hanging clouds.

tornado alley seasonThey require very specific weather conditions in order to form, with the most intense tornadoes spawning from what are known as supercell thunderstorms.

How is a Supercell Thunderstorm Formed?

These rotating storms provide all of the ingredients that tornadoes need to get started.

First, fast-moving wind from the storm will roll air into a spinning tube that lies perpendicular to the ground. Next, the warmer air found near ground level will begin to lift a section of this tube of air into a vertical position.

These updrafts produce two vortices, one of which will die out, and the other of which will go on to form the heart of the developing supercell thunderstorm.

For all of these steps to occur, creating the right environment for conversion into a serious tornado, the supercell will need support from increasingly strong winds that vary in direction based on height.

This causes updrafts, which tend to rotate as the warm air rises. In approximately 30 percent of cases, this violent churning of the air will produce a tornado below the supercell.

How Do Tornadoes Form?

In order for a tornado to form, the air temperature within the storm must be within a very specific range, just a few degrees colder than the surrounding air. tornado alley season

Strong wind changes in the atmosphere and high relative humidity are also required for tornadoes to form, and downdrafts must occur in exactly the right area of the thunderstorm.

Despite the very particular environment tornadoes require to form giant, destructive storms, they are surprisingly prevalent in many areas.

Tornado Alley Season Facts

All of this information leaves the reader prepared to answer the question: what is tornado alley?

While there are not any exact geographical boundaries to the area of the country colloquially known as tornado alley and it can be hard to pin down where tornado alley is located in the U.S.

The term is most frequently used to describe the tornado-prone areas in the middle of the country between the Appalachian Mountains and the Rocky Mountains. Tornado Alley in the US

Most people define the borders of tornado alley as beginning in central Texas and ending in eastern South Dakota, covering areas of Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and western Ohio.

Of all those states that people think of when they wonder what is tornado alley, Texas is the one that reports the highest number of tornadoes annually.

However, both Kansas and Oklahoma report more tornadoes per acre of land. Despite this area’s designation as tornado alley, there are plenty of other areas of the country that routinely experience tornadoes as well, such as the Dixie Alley.

Where is Dixie Alley

Dixie Alley is set up as the area that includes the following geographical areas in the United States. This area is defined as eastern Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia. It also borders up against South Carolina, North Carolina, and as well as western Kentucky, and Southeastern Missouri.Dixie Alley You can also include northern Florida in Dixie Alley.

As I was mentioning Florida I wanted to share a fact little known to many.

When it comes to interesting facts tornadoes in Florida are actually more common than they are in tornado alley, but they rarely reach the same intensity.

Origin of the Term

The first known use of the term “tornado alley” dates back to 1952, when several Air Force meteorologists studying extreme weather events coined it in their research project.

These same two researchers were responsible for the first successful tornado forecast prior to this study in 1948 as well.

This accomplishment is an impressive feat, given the difficulties associated with predicting these extreme weather events even in contemporary times.

Once the phrase was introduced, it took hold in the news media and its use is almost ubiquitous today.
